Publisher's Summary:
John Horst traces the adventures of a cast of characters, both real and fictional, who answered the call to put things right in Cuba.
Theodore Roosevelt, redefining himself as a soldier and warleader; Jonathan Whelihan, the Arizona wrangler, hungry to prove himself and gain freedom from the bonds of an overbearing father; Rocky Killebrew, Jonathan's adopted brother, struggling with a proclivity for strong drink; nurse Clara Maass, seeking adventure and fulfillment while serving God and country, and many of the historical personages of this larger-than-life history - Bucky O'Neill, William McGinty, and Black Jack Pershing, among others.
John Hay called it "a splendid little war", but Roosevelt's Boys brings to bear that no war is little, or splendid, regardless of duration or scale.
Members Reviews:
beautifully written account of Teddy Roosevelt and the colorful cast ...
If you would be drawn to a well researched, beautifully written account of Teddy Roosevelt and the colorful cast of characters that might have surrounded him, the latest John Horst novel is a must read. The eccentric, courageous, and brilliant Roosevelt, although given top billing in this drama about the Spanish American War and his troop of Rough Riders, is not really the protagonist. That role is shared by Sean Whelihan, an Arizona wrangler, his adopted brother, Rocky Killebrew, nurse Clara Maass, a steel-spined, but compassionate advocate of her wounded and disease-stricken patients. In describing he impact of war on them and the people with whom they share their lives, Horst weaves a compelling tapestry not only of heroism, but the common traits of the human condition, love, hate, idealism, cynicism, compassion and violence. In a world made noisy and distracted by social media, sensationalism, and self-indulgence, Horst's novel is a welcome return to an era when time-honored value systems directed human motivation and behavior.
Wonderful book by a wonderful writer.
This is a wonderfully written book by one of my very favorite authors. Like all his books, it's smooth, easy to read, entertaining, well researched, and thought provoking with a cast of marvelous characters. Mr. Horst's portrayal of Clara Maass, the gutsy compassionate nurse, especially touched me.
If you haven't read Horst yet you owe it to yourself to give him a try and if you've read some of his other great books like The Mule Tamer you will not be disappointed with this one.
TR's Boys and Girls
A thoughtful, well-told story about Arizona cowboys caught up in the great adventure in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. But it also is an account of the nurses from the East who volunteer to care for the Rough Rider wounded. So the book might have been named Rooseveltâs Boys and Girls. Some of the most touching episodes involve the love affairs between the Arizonans and the girls they left at home and between the nurses and the soldiers, both wounded and well. Combat scenes are gripping, especially action against enemy snipers. Colonel Roosevelt is often among his men and women, a caring commander who is approachable and close to his charges. A page-turner from a master at historical fiction.
A Splendid Tale of Derring-Do!
John C. Horst has done it again. Rooseveltâs Boys takes characters who would be perfectly at home in the Old West and drops them straight them into the American military expedition into Cuba in 1898.
