If you read just one book this year, read this!
This book is worthy of 10 stars. I read constantly, and this is the best book I have read in a long time. I just finished it and I am already thinking of reading it again. It is an entirely satisfying epic revolving around how two Hawaiian families were impacted by WWII. It is about love and pride and ancient legends and music. It travels from Honolulu to New Orleans to Paris to Shanghai to small Pacific islands. I never knew the extent of Japanese atrocities to women during the war. There are many scenes that are hard to stomach. The reader cares about the characters, who emerged from their ordeals with differing degrees of damage. The writing itself is literary, metaphorical, philosophical, soaring at times. I don't know what I will read next. This book is a very tough act to follow. If you read just one book this year, this is the one. You will not be disappointed.
Still haunted by this book a year later...
Of all the novels I have ever read (I'm over 50 and have read a lot of books) this one has haunted me and stayed with me. I read it about a year ago and it is still with me. I was just thinking about it again so I decided to write a review saying so. The prose and language are beautiful. I work with a human trafficking organization and this author's descriptions have helped me understand some of what our girls have experienced at the hands of men. The broken stay broken unless God Himself intervenes. The men are just as broken. Don't read it if you can't take it. But the truth is...it's a brutal subject and the author writes about it with absolutely poetic language. Incredible skill.
I admire and love this author writing style
I admire and love this author writing style, and am in the process of reading everything Kiana Davenport has written. For this reason I'll probably always give her work 5 stars. Her authenticity and research are a marvel. Her description of the native Hawaiian culture, her description of early jazz in this book leave me breathless. If I had a concern for this book, it was the relentless pressure on her characters to the degree I felt they were a bit manipulated to make the story arc work, though they were so clearly drawn that I agonized for them all the way through. Kiana definitely has an agenda in her books, and it's an important and valuable one, but in this book I felt at times that it overshadowed her characters and story. It's wonderful to read the fierce and extravagant voice of the writer though, and I would recommend the experience to anyone who loves someone so dedicated to her work.
,Great value. Fascinating, illuminating, rich.
I assume this story is based on what actually happened. If so, I learned a lot that has never been told about Pearl Harbor, the history of Hawaiians, and the atrocities that happened in the war, not just in Germany, but also in Japan. If you, like me, shy away from true horror stories, don't let that stop you this time.
