Great first novel

This is Alex Goughs first historical novel. The book takes place during the reign of Tiberius. Our protagonist is Pilus Prior Centurion Carbo who has just returned to Rome after 25 years in the Legions. A neighhood protection gang shakes down a tavern Carbo is eating in so he buys it. Elissa is a Priestess of the Carthaginian deities Baal-Hammon and Tanit; she plans to destroy Rome to avenge Carthage. She plans to sacrifice a child to launch her plans on Rome. The slave mother and child run away and seek protection from Carbo. Carbo has become friends with Lucius Vedius Vespillo, Tribune of the Vigiles. The Vigiles are an organization founded by Augustus for the purpose of maintaining fire safety, firefighting and law enforcement. They are the lowest rung of the Roman military/police system. Carbo must fight the protection gang and save Rome from destruction. It makes an action packed suspenseful story.

The book is well written and the characters development is excellent. The descriptions bring the city to life including the smell and filth. I enjoyed the fact the people in the story are of the lower classes, including freedmen and slaves. So many stories are written about just the upper classes. Gough is an excellent story teller. I am looking forward to more books by him. Alex Hyde-White did an excellent job narrating the story. From reading this book I have gained a new author and narrator to follow.

Would you consider the audio edition of Watchmen of Rome to be better than the print version?

Yes, I love to listen to great readers. I listen to the books while I walk our trails.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Carbo is a great character because he has his weaknesses, but he is basically a good man with a sense of justice.

Which scene was your favorite?

There is a wonderful scene when Carbo has to confront gang members in a tavern.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me hope that there would be more books with the same main character.

Any additional comments?

The history of this period is very good. Rome was full of gangs and also veterans who would have had some sense of honor and would have clashed with the gangs.. The premise of the story is excellent.

A good historical fiction. It portrays Roman life in the 1st Century CE while telling an enjoyable tale. The characters were easy to like or hate and story had a lot of action.

Annoying

I like period pieces set before the war, and the writing on this story starts off pretty well. But the two main characters the twins are really selfish little girls. It is hard to care at all about their antics because their behavior is pretty bad and they care about no one but themselves.

If that was not bad enough, the author switches POV between these two children, and several other groups of characters.

I got bored because at the very least I wanted to listen to the story about the girls. Instead I head-hopped into the heads of Irish grooms living in Ireland, two strange girls they meet on the street, the friend of the girls mother. Whomever. It was distracting.

With audiobooks it is hard to skip ahead and follow when stories diverge into different POV's.

I don't recommend it unless you don't mind spoiled children and stories told with lots of different characters randomly opining about what is going on.

A nice read if a little abridged in places

I have listened to many Katie flynns and love the narrator Anne Dover.

although this one did flow I didn't enjoy it as much as others. sometimes the story jumped forward in time sometimes just after a big thing occurred or sometimes over a few years. So it felt almost like an abridged version at times, because parts of the story I would've liked to have had more detail on were just not there or only briefly referred to. This is strange for a Katie Flynn as normally she stays with characters.

I didn't feel as connected to the characters because the story was split over two groups whereas her stories usually centre on just one. Having said this there was still enough for me to want to stay with it to the end.

Interesting

Reading about a war of the past was different. Considering how unpopular that war was & how shabby our veterans were treated when they came home after so many were killed and imprisoned for doing what they were ordered to do, it's hard to understand why or how the American people could have been so stupid as to treat our vets as they did.

All wars are terrible but the Viet Nam war was one of yt?

Good follow-on to original

This took the series into the transition from French Indochina into the US involvement with Vietnam. I thought it was a good read, but after this book the series would start to lose my interest. I enjoy Scott's writing; easy to read, fun characters...., so I switched to other series he has written.

Great follow up to Shakespeare's McBeth

I enjoyed this audiobook so much! I am a lover of Shakespeare's writings, he seems to have an amazing grasp of human nature. I also have often wondered what could happen in a sequel to McBeth or Hamlet. Many authors would not be up to the task. This author did very well.

Wonderfully bent history

This is a delightful, well written, and well read historical twist. Not to be confused with history, but a really good "what if".

What would have made Banquo's Son better?

A bit more originality would be nice. The plot is a rather hackneyed tale of star-crossed lovers (pun intended). I'm thinking he was trying to borrow some of the elements of Hamlet, unsuccessfully (or at least very badly). Derivative is probably a kind description.

Would you ever listen to anything by T. K. Roxborogh again?

Probably not.

Would you be willing to try another one of Napoleon Ryans performances?

I couldn't quite make out what accent the narrator thought he was doing (certainly neither Elizabethan english or Scottish) and his idea of a woman's voice appears to be some sort of falsetto. Maybe I would listen to something of his set as modern english, as long as there were no female characters.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Boredom and annoyance. At some point it became so painful to listen to that I had to give up.

Starts Well, but Becomes Far-Fetched

This historical novel focuses on Flora McDonald, the young Scottish woman known for helping Bonnie Prince Charlie escape to the rugged Isle of Skye months after his defeat at Culloden, the prince disguised as a seamstress. Much of the story is familiar, but Gold has spun a brief romance between Flora and Charlie during the escape--one that resulted in a son whose true identity was hidden. At least until Flora decides to use his paternity to halt the rising American Revolution. The story is far-fetched (her grandson even meets Napoleon . . . ) and a bit too romancey for my taste. But I'll give him some points for creating a lively character in Flora and for his depictions of the rugged Scottish countryside.

Very interesting read about Flora MacDonald.

I really enjoyed the book. Good history and story. kept my attention from the start. Well done. Would highly recommend Excellent narrator.

Step into the world of Hollywood post Pearl Harbor

I've come late to this series, but that doesn't seem to matter. See the publisher's summary for an adequate recap of the story without spoilers. The author manages to weave historical personages and documented behaviors with fictional characters in a way that is seamless, pleasing, and revealing of deep historical research. If you enjoy this era and place, you cannot miss with this book. I know that I want to read the other books in this series, not because of any lack in this one, but because I know that I will enjoy them.

Mr Axt brings his talents to this performance in ways that enhance the depth and personalities of each character, making the entire experience more riveting.
