Order them all, because you won't want to stop. The action is fast and furious.

This is third in a series of historical fiction by Dudley Pope. All of these are fictional novels based on British Admiralty records of the Napoleonic era. Written in the best tradition of Forester and O'Brien, these books will capture your imagination. And if you haven't read the Hornblower series by Forester, or the Aubrey/Maturin series by O'Brien, try them also. All of these are excellent books that you will treasure and reread. I particularly like these books by Pope. I recommend that you buy them all at once and read them in order. You will be glad you did.

If you enjoy reading accurate descriptions of naval maneuvers in the age of sail, or simply a good adventure yarn, Dudley Pope delivers. Pope conveys how the best of the best, handle emergency situations. He portrays these situations with realism and authenticity.

Review of this book:

Ramage, is given command of the Triton with orders to deliver a warning to three offshore fleets that the fleet in homeport has mutinied. His first job is to get the Triton under way and he comes up with a surprise to get the mutinous Triton's out of port. Even then he still has to hold the crew together and build their loyalty. Then upon arriving in the West Indies, he is given a mission and set up by his admiral to take a fall and must gamble against the odds to be successful.

For more historical information about mutiny in history, read the factual story of the most notorious mutiny of all time in the, The Black Ship by Dudley Pope. It gives keen insight into the conditions of the time, an analysis of the mind of a heartless Captain whose floggings often resulted in the deaths of his men, the terrrible casualty rates due to Yellow Fever, and the gruesome deaths of the officers. One horrific tale, but if you have the stomach for it, well worth reading.

A good ol' sailing story about the turn of the 18th Century British Navy

I am a long time fan of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey Maturin books. I have been looking for some more sailing books. It seems books on the British Navy are the best stories one finds. Pope's Ramage is a believable character and the history is accurate and fun to read. Ramage's relationship to Jackson reminds me of Aubrey and his close ties to some of his sailors. There is more than one event ongoing in the book, though not all at the same time. Pope weaves them together with no loss of the story .

Very good story about sailing ships and iron men. Another in Dudley Pope's well written sea yarn. The Ramage series is just as good as the Bolitho series and is infintely more readable than the Hornblower series.

If youve read my previous reviews, you already know that I hate spoilers and that Ill do everything I can to avoid them. The rest of the story will follow Loretto, Vincent and some really impressive Organized Crime figures, real and imagined, from 1931 as they fight for supremacy in New York.

Ed Falco is a great writer, he tells a gripping and compelling story, combining alike real life and fictive characters, describing with excellent vividness a New York City torn apart by gang wars, betrayal, corruption, drama, sex and murder. He even makes you care about someone you know you shouldnt, and thats something that not too many authors are able to do these days. The book is not very fast paced, Mr.

I'm still not sure what the story was about. The reason for the actions of the players escaped me and I soldiered on to the end. Oh well!!

Suprising Fun -- if you just go with it

I read this book after being told Sarah Waters stole the characters of Helen and Julia from "The Night Watch" from it. (To which I say, sort of, but with Waters, it's always more complex.)

The book starts slow. The first time I read it I skimmed the first 50 pages, covering a sweet, dull teen named Elsie. The book hits its stride when she runs away from home and to her sister Leo's place on the Thames. Leo's a 28 (?) year-old tomboy who writes cowboy novels under the pen name Tex O'Hara. Easygoing and cool, she whiles away her days with her girlfriend (take note, Night Watch readers - named Helen) on their little houseboat. The book is striking for its casual portrayal of the couple's lesbianism. It possesses a freedom and assurance that has not been doubled since. Nobody (thankfully) seems to give much of a damn about it - least of all the women themselves.

Renault throws in a twist with the sudden attraction between Leo and her male writing friend of many years, Joe. (She doesn't say it in the afterword but I suspect she did it to escape the censors banning her book like Radclyffe Hall's). But considering this book came out ONLY 15 YEARS after the soppish Well of Loneliness, it feels effervescent and postmodern. The ending is "silly," as Renault herself admitted, but this is still a cool, chill glass of the future. The afterword itself is worth the price of admission.

A Great Novel

Those who have never discovered Mary Renault are in for a treat. While many are familiar with her classical Greek novels, she also wrote some wonderful novels set in the 1930s. This is one of them. For beautiful writing and in-depth character analysis, she is one of the best.

I really love these books and hope that Cornwell gets around to finishing the story. I realise that the money was in writing the Sharpe books another favorite of mine but that wasa while back and there is such a rich backdrop in the American Civil war for Nate to be involved in.

Listening to the first book in the series I worried about Andrew and the accents, he was a little inconsistent, but as the series has progressed he got into it and brought the characters alive. I would now seek him out as a narrator, it was a pleasure to listen to him.

I prefer to enjoy a good book such as this over a period of time although you want to listen to a whole chapter at one sitting

Being a long standing fan of Bernard Cornwell and his English historical fiction I was not sure how he would "travel" to America. However the evident extent of his research and his own "take" on historical fact shines through in this series to make it hugely entertaining.

Bathsheba revealed

If you could sum up A Peek at Bathsheba in three words, what would they be?

Inventive. Intimate. Surprising.

What other book might you compare A Peek at Bathsheba to and why?

Poznansky's work with biblical characters is a modernist look at ancient tales, which few do as well today. If I had to compare it to other works, I'd choose John Barth's Chimera, for the way both authors give a surprising immediacy to the story and remake the characters with more modern sensibilities, or The Last Temptation of Christ by Kazantzakis for its use of graphic language.

Have you listened to any of Justin Harmers other performances before? How does this one compare?

I had not heard Justin Harmer's work before I listened to the Bathsheba sample, when I marveled at what a perfect choice Poznansky had made to narrate this book. His delivery is smooth and always appropriate, his pronunciations correct, and he adds his own verve. Having read the book previously, I will say that Harmer made the story different from the way I heard it in my head, bringing out surprising nuances. I'll need to listen to other books that he's narrated and I have read make comparisons.

I spent many hours watching Westerns with my uncles as a youngster. My preteens were spent reading all the books in our school's library that featured horses. Then I discovered Max Brand in a used bookstore...the clouds parted and sunlight appeared! That small classic Signet covered book with delicate yellowing pages is still one of my prized possessions.

Reading a Max Brand book is like watching an older TV western. There is excitement, adventure, cliffhangers, bromance (a cowboy would die for his best friend), cattle, as well as detested sheep, horses, a lovely young lady, someone in distress, posses, range wars, hangings, cattle drives, gold, greed, revenge, family, sisterns, chewing tobacco, card playing, rolling smokes, doing the right thing. There's lush grass, barren desert, breathtaking mountains, raging rivers. Sodbusters, foremen, barkeeps, sheriffs, ranchers, whiskey peddlers, bankers, very few doctors, drovers, bounty hunters.

Stagecoaches, trains, covered wagons, buckboards, and carriages. There weren't any native Americans, but there were many Indian tribes, and a proud people were called savages and warriors. A western town of any worth always had a bank, a general store, a saloon, a restaurant, sheriff's office/jail, a hotel, a stable, a barbershop where baths could be taken. The larger towns had newspaper offices, lawyers, a place easily converted into a courtroom, sometimes it's own gallows. Hitching posts and water troughs abounded. Along with six shooters and Winchesters. No wonder violence prevailed.

I was plunged back into this world when I read two of the three stories in this Kindle edition of THE WOLF STRAIN (I also own the hardcover edition). The third story involves the serialized character Bull Hunter whose other stories I plan to read in chronological order. The first two stories in this anthology are great introductions to this author if you've never read him or a great pair of stories if you have. It's nice that with the Go To button on the Kindle Fire you can easily view the table of contents.

If you expect all the swearing and sex you find in modern westerns you will be very disappointed there isn't any of either in a Max Brand book. He makes up for it in other ways. You are so caught up in the master story telling you don't even have time to miss it.

In the first story "Bared Fangs" an innocent very angry man returns home after being unjustly imprisoned for ten long brutal years that aged and changed him. Turning him into a gaunt savage and snarling wolf, baring his fangs at everyone--Whether friend or foe. When the murders start, he is the main suspect....but is he once again innocent or actually guilty this time?

True friendship is the underlying theme in "Gallows Gamble" the second story. This story is quintessential Max Brand a teller of tall tales that are great adventures like Indiana Jones and today's action movies. The happenings are so fantastic that you have to suspend belief to enjoy them.

In Africa, Walter had longed for his homeland and dreamed of rebuilding his life as a lawyer, yet ultimately he and his family - wife Jettel, daughter Regina, and baby Max - realize that Germany seems as exotic and unwelcoming to them in 1947 as Kenya had seemed in 1938. Hunger and desperation are omnipresent in bombed-out Frankfurt, and this Jewish family - especially Regina, who misses Africa the most - has a hard time adjusting to their new circumstances.

Yet slowly the family adapts to their new home amidst the ruins. In Frankfurt, Regina matures into a woman and, though her parents want her to marry an upstanding Jewish man, her love life progresses in its own idiosyncratic fashion. She develops a passion for art and journalism and begins her professional career at a Frankfurt newspaper. Walter at last finds professional success as a lawyer, but never quite adjusts to life in Frankfurt, recalling with nostalgia his childhood in Upper Silesia and his years in Africa. Only his son Max truly finds what Walter had hoped for: A new homeland in Germany.

Although the Redlichs receive kindness from strangers, they also learn anti-Semitism still prevails in post-Nazi Germany. They partake in the West German "economic miracle" with their own home, a second-hand car, and the discovery of television, but young Max's discovery of the Holocaust revives long-buried memories. Rich in memorable moments and characters, this novel portrays the reality of postwar German society in vivid and candid detail.

Schizophrenic-but not entertaining "Sybil" variety

What disappointed you about Somewhere in Germany?

I wanted to glimpse life in post-war Germany. The book was successful in such a glimpse. Unfortunately, it felt like she took a diary and tried to weave it with a related historic novel. We were introduced to characters over and over who were then left undeveloped. I wanted to know more about Martin, I wanted to know why Schlahinski was arrested, what came of the arrest, how he ended up free. I wanted to better know her thoughts on sleeping with her boss and how that affected her faith and her soul. Did it go on forever? How did she break it off? Only a handful of numerous unanswered questions.

What could Stefanie Zweig have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

She should have abandoned the diary and written a historic novel.

Did Max Roll do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Max did a reasonable performance - I would listen to him again.
