Excellent historical fiction!!

By the title I was a bit dubious about how serious this series would be. But I am delighted to say it is rich in actual history & given a magnificent if humbling look into the lives of the times. I enjoyed it so much!! I just hope the next 2 books make it to audio soon!!

Mesmerizing mix

If this intriguing layered novel only told the family focused story of Lee Lien, a book-nerdy young woman with an on-hold academic career trying to straddle the contrasting cultures and conflicting expectations of modern America, where she was born, and traditional pre-war Vietnam, where her strong-willed mother and gracious grandfather spent the earlier parts of their lives, that would have been enough to capture my interest.

If instead Pioneer Girl was simply a literary mystery, with Lee Lien so obsessed by a book related incident that may connect her family's former Saigon restaurant to the author(s) of the Little House on the Prairie series that she chases clues across the country, from dusty library shelves to colorfully painted San Francisco neighborhoods, even abandoning her normally somewhat passive upright nature long enough to slip archival materials into her handbag, I'd make sure to get my hands on a copy.

But Pioneer Girl is both books, and talk about obsessed, I couldn't put it down. This isn't the kind of mystery with dead bodies or definite answers, but that just made this coming of age quest all the more intriguing.

Pioneering then and now - an uneasy parallel.

I was very much attracted to this book because I am an immigrant who has spent a large part of her life working in refugee resettlement, and my children were devoted fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder's books which their father read to them faithfully every night after supper until all the many volumes were finished. Like the protagonist, I also wrote a long dissertation on literature and spent several years pursuing original material. So I approached reading this book with alacrity, feeling it could have been written especially for me, and plunging into it with the passion of an adolescent reader.

I've been reading WW1 books lately, this one is poignant; a story about the love lost, and the beginning of healing. Well read by the author.

Monotonously read through most

Book about several depressed women after WWI who have lost loved ones to the war. I guess. They are trying to awaken but the book depressed and saddened me.

Good story & educational

I enjoyed the story, loved the narration, and learning a little about typhoid. Learning about the detective work involved in the discovery process of how it is spread as well as how they treated Mary was fascinating.

Interesting and sad story

A very concise history of "typhoid" Mary from the view point of Mary and the doctors trying to prevent her from spreading the disease. The narration was very good.

Elizabeth I court as seen through other eyes

Really enjoyed this novel about real-life lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth the First, the Swedish beauty, Elin (Helena) von Snakenborg. Travelling with her queen to the court of the English ruler, we first meet Elin when her fiancé has abandoned her for her sister, her dowry has been spent, and she in a conflicted rather than heartbroken state she makes the dangerous and long voyage from her home in Sweden to England.

Beautiful, smart and not overwhelmed by English court politics and games and understanding she has little to return home to, Elin is given a position at Elizabethâs side. Earning the Queenâs trust and friendship, she is rewarded with marriage to the highest noble in the land, and becomes the Marchioness of Northampton â second only to the queen. Happy in her relationship, she also enjoys serving a ruler who demands the utmost loyalty from her woman and men, regardless of the personal cost.

Surrounded by Catholic traitors and those who plot to take her throne near and far, including Mary, Queen of Scots, Elizabeth is both cautious and capricious and Byrd tries to capture the tension, beauty and fierce intellectualism and creativity of Elizabethâs reign, using Helena (as sheâs now called) as the lens through which to view it.

Byrd quotes from Elizabethâs own correspondence as well as known documents of the time, so careful is she to be true to history, yet, sometimes, history drowns out narrative, turns the characters into two-dimensional beings rather than passionate (or not) living breathing beings with whom we feel invested.

Cons: The story is in the mid 1800s and the animal slaughter is gruesome!

Some might find the story slow. Definitely not high adventure!

Pros: I enjoyed the character development and the very interesting diversity, all enclosed together on a boat headed for the Arctic.

Beautiful Love Story

What did you love best about Adé?

Imagine sitting down with your grandmother asking how she met your grandfather and listening to her tell the story while a fire is crackling in the background. Warm and cozy. That's how this story made me feel. I truly enjoyed it.

This was awful

What disappointed you about Bittersweet?

I have been a huge Colleen McCulloch fan but this was just awful. The storyline was nothing and the use of so called Australian slang "starve the lizards"???? An English guy comes out to an Australian country town to run a hospital and while interviewing staff for their positions tells one of the nurses he wants to marry her, without even knowing who she is. Come on!!!

What could Colleen McCullough have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

She could have done a little research into country life in Australia.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Deidre Rubenstein?

Anyone - Mickey Mouse would have done a better job.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Bittersweet?

90% of them, it was all just so implausible.

I couldn't finish this book, I thought I did well to get through the first half. It was painful to listen to.

An entertaining Australian novel

I am a big fan of Colleen McCullough. I have read most of her books and I am looking forward to her next! Having been a nurse in my earlier years straight from school in Australia I recognised some of the aspects of the nursing way of life that Colleen describes. Life was quite strict for a nurse even in the late 60's and 70's. I loved the historical setting and the characters portrayed. It is not attempting to be a great piece of literature but it held my interest throughout. It was entertaining and charming with twists that made it work well.

The way in which the narrator was able to fit her voice so well to the various characters both male & female.

I enjoyed all the characters as they each had their own story to tell, my least favourite though was Charles Burdem.
