    Language: English

    Genres: Fiction, Historical
    Publisher's Summary:
A moody, atmospheric literary thriller and "a timeless tale of migration" (The Guardian) from one of Europe's biggest-selling authors.
Despite its biblical title - which comes from the opening lines of the book of Exodus - award-winning novelist Tommy Wieringa has crafted perhaps his most timely book yet as he traces two stories doomed to collide.
In one we follow a group of starving, near-feral Eurasian refugees on a harrowing quest for survival; in the other we follow Pontus Beg, a policeman from a small border town on the steppe, as he investigates the death of a rabbi, one of the town's two remaining Jews.
What follows is a gripping saga in which the two stories race toward each other, and Beg will be shaken to his core by what each one reveals about man's dark nature and the possibility - or impossibility - of his own redemption.
A virtual parable for our times, These Are the Names offers suspenseful listening to a crisis that continues to dominate headlines and simultaneously explores the enduring questions of faith, identity, and what it means to be "home".

6 stars each for the author, translator & narrator
There's a quality of magic about this novel. It started with Wieringa's story. From start to finish, through translation and narration the magic has remained.
You know the sort of book you didn't think much about but when you picked it up you couldn't put it down again until it was finished, absorbed, dwelt upon and teased apart? This is that book.
There are two stories to this book. One is that of Pontus Beg, the Police Commissioner of a town near the border of the Steppes. It's a town full of darkly satirical circumstances. It is very funny and at times not a little disturbing.
The second story is of a group of migrants travelling through the Steppes. They were taken to the border, pointed in a direction & told if they walk in that direction, in a short time they would arrive at a city. The city never materialises and they are left wandering without food or shelter.
When the two plots meet someone is dead It's left to Commissioner Beg to investigate who the migrants are, where they've come from & who killed the dead man.
This story has a feeling about it distinct from all other authors. The only near comparison I can make is with fellow Dutch author Cees Nooteboom. Wieringa's chosen subject is very close to home in 2016 and for all the feel of magic the story has its feet are firmly on solid ground.
I loved the translation. Without knowing what the original Dutch version was like I feel that Garrett's translation captured an incredible atmosphere.
As for the narration - Arthur Morley was very well cast. He maintains & builds the atmosphere suggested by Wieringa & Garrett. On top of that he's great to listen to, through the humour and through the darkness. It's another great performance from Morley.
    Bleak
I couldn't continue to listen to this book because it seemed to go on and on into human decadence.
    i'm not ready for that!

When Britain declares war on Germany in 1939, Carolyn Maddison is still a schoolgirl. Her elder brother, Alastair, wastes no time in joining the RAF as a flying officer, and Carolyn decides that when she is 18 she will follow him into the service by joining the Women's Auxiliary Air Force.
While reporting to the Air Ministry in London, she meets a good-looking, charismatic pilot, Charlie Wade, currently employed in propaganda work. He believes that with her calm demeanor and resilience, Carolyn should work as an intelligence officer and suggests she serve on an active bombing station.
At her side throughout the courses and postings that follow is Lucy Gaston, naturally quick-witted and sparky, a perfect foil for her friend. The young WAAFs both obtain prestigious postings in 5 Group Bomber Command, where they perform the vital tasks of briefing and debriefing aircrew returning from operations over Germany.
Lucy, an incorrigible optimist, falls head over heels for a member of a Lancaster bomber crew while Carolyn resists her feelings for its dashing pilot. She decides it's not worth the risk of loving a man in wartime...only to wonder if she has done the right thing when a new WAAF on the station sets her cap at him. For Lucy and Carolyn, life on a WWII bombing station brings drama, heartbreak and suspense in this touching love story.

    Very disappointing

Going into this book, I had no idea that this was the second book in the series. I started Light on Lucrezia with a bit of trepidation since I wasnât sure if I would understand the story as it was a sequel, following Madonna of the Seven Hills, the first book in Jean Plaidyâs Lucrezia Borgia series. However, it was soon evident that this book could be read as a stand-alone because there was no confusion, not even a hint that another book preceeded it.
Plaidy introduces a new image of Lucrezia; instead of the sexy, murdering vixen she history normally portrays her as, she is a misunderstood girl who feels very much alone. I enjoyed this new perspective on Lucrezia since it presented her as a normal human being rather than some otherworldly creature of Satan the Borgias are normally viewed as.
However, that is where the fun in this book stops. Starting with Lucreziaâs character, she was the very definition of Mary Sue. Radiant, charming, witty and intelligent, she was flat and unrealistic. I did pity her when her during her miscarriages but apart from that, I felt nothing. Her difficulties and problems did not stir me and I was irritated with her lack of nerve. She willingly went along with everything her father, Rodrigo, and her brother, Cesarae, planned. She accepted everything they said even though deep down, she knew that it was somehow wrong and illogical. Being in her head wasnât fun because while the events of the book were interesting and even enjoyable to read, Lucrezia was just a dull and vapid character. Completely lifeless and uninspired, her perspectives were soporific.
Lucreziaâs innocence was the very definition of exasperating. During the first parts of the book, this was what sets her apart from the rest of her family. Whereas the rest were vipers and cunning snakes, she was content to lark around and talk to people. However, it becomes vexing halfway into the book since she was completely aware of her father and Cesaraeâs evildoings yet she didnât act in order to stop it. She was indifferent and apathetic, satisfied with sitting around and crying for all the deaths that had taken place without actually acting to stop it.
Even after her beloved husband was killed by her brother, she was still the same. She had moments of distrust and anger but in the end, she accepted that her brother was her husbandâs murderer. Blood does run thicker than water but come on, she was a Borgia and she should have a spine at the least.
The other issue I had with this book was its historical accuracy.

Anne of Green Gables and a young Annie Oakley embodied in one endearing main character!
A sweet story of an uncommon friendship. Richly developed characters in a well researched setting of the Ozark hills during the days of prohibition. I loved the story and characters! Highly recommend!
READ THIS BOOK!! you will not regret it
what a great coming of age story of a 12 yr old girl. if you have any curiosity about what it was like to be poor, smart and innocent growing up with Ozark hillbillies in 1920 this story will send joy into your heart and soul. the author captures guilelessness and simplicity of this young girl who has a strong faith in the Lord and doing the right thing as instructed by Christ teachings. you learn bits of mid-American history of the Civil War, about the outside world of prohibition encroaching into the mountains and meet the famous Chicago gangster Frank Nitti. then there are the friendship stones. what they mean brings a lump in your throat and joy to your heart. the simple acts of kindness done for the grumpy and dangerous hermit reminds us today it's the little everyday things we do that count.
this is not a goody-two shoes story there are bad guys and evil. awakening of sexual desire, good neighbors and not nice ones too. a good story. I am glad I read it and you will be too.
    An enjoyable and amazing surprise
It was strongly recommended that I get this book and although I do not usually read this genre, I got it to read. I am amazed, surprised, and downright flabbergasted that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. It is not even close to my normal scifi, but it had plenty of action and excitement to hold my interest.
LillieBeth Hazkit is a 12-year-old girl growing up in 1920 Ozark Mountains, trying to make sense of the backwoods, poverty-stricken world she inhabits and that is what makes this historical fiction, but it reads like fact. So much so, that while I could not put the book down look up some things, I had to mark certain pages for later review to verify the history. I had trouble finding out about the town of Oasis, Missouri, but I did find it buried under the water of Table Rock Lake. This is a part of U.S. that I am familiar with and it rings so true that the authors must have a deep connection to the Ozarks. I bookmarked the glossary at the back, not only for referral, but because it was, at times, downright laugh-out-loud funny.
This young girl is trying to grow up and become a woman. That is a hard task made harder by hard times.

A highly original, tragicomic novel as seen through the eyes of Sirius, an extraordinary dog who helps his Jewish family escape from Germany to California, becomes a Hollywood star, and ultimately contributes to Hitler's downfall.
Levi, a fox terrier, lives with his family in a grand townhouse in Berlin. Each day he enjoys a walk through the neighborhood, where people greet him by name. But the year is 1938, and Berlin is no longer safe for Levi or the Liliencrons, his Jewish owners. They rename him Sirius, after the constellation, to protect him.
One night Nazi troops storm the city and begin to search houses. Sirius alerts the family, and they manage to flee to California. In his new home, Carl Liliencron becomes a chauffeur, and Sirius befriends everyone from Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant to Rita Hayworth and Jack Warner. He is renamed Hercules and becomes a canine movie star. Little does Sirius know that he'll soon have to perform his most difficult acting role yet when, through a series of exceptional events as World War II unfolds, he winds up at the right hand of Hitler himself. Can Sirius help the German resistance, derail the Führer, and reunite with his family? Or is the cost of peace too high?
With charisma, heart, and delightfully spry prose, Sirius is an enchanting fairy tale about love and humanity and a roving exploration of a momentous historical moment. Like My Dog Skip and The Artist, this feel-good novel will make you stand up and cheer.

Would you consider the audio edition of Sirius to be better than the print version?
I haven't read the print version.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Of course the dog Sirius. I like books narrated by the main character, in this case the dog.
Have you listened to any of Mark Meadowss other performances before? How does this one compare?
No I haven't. He was terrific. Really did accents well.
If you could take any character from Sirius out to dinner, who would it be and why?
    Maybe, Peter Lorie.
    Any additional comments?
I started out not really being sure if I was going to like the book, but it grew on me, and then I couldn't put it down. Great story told in a non traditional way. Highly recommend!

    Rape Porn
Is there anything you would change about this book?
    The constant gratuitous rape scenes
What was most disappointing about J. K. Swifts story?
    See above
What three words best describe Brad Willss voice?
    Engaging exciting new
Did Acre inspire you to do anything?
Never purchase any of this man's writing again.
    Any additional comments?
I could have dealt with the authors lack of expertise on swordsmanship and weaponry in general, but fact that the story was lack luster compounded by his repellant and constant use of rape as a plot device was disgusting
    Ho Hum
    What disappointed you about Acre?
This is a pretty conventional sword and shield saga, with Good Guys and Bad Guys, plenty of gore, good women and evil ones, and so forth. The plotting is good, and the characters are interesting enough. It's not a bad book by any means, just a very conventional and fairly predictable one.
Would you ever listen to anything by J. K. Swift again?
    no
What does Brad Wills bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He is a fine narrator, with good diction and timing.

    Publisher's Summary:
When Robert Lescher died in 2012, an unpublished manuscript of M. F. K. Fisher's was discovered neatly packed in one of the literary agent's signature red boxes. Inspired by Fisher's affair with Dillwyn Parrish - who was to become her second husband - The Theoretical Foot is the master stylist's first novel. In it she describes the life she all too briefly had with the man she'd ever after describe as the one great love of her life.
It tells of a late-summer idyll at the Swiss farmhouse of Tim and Sara, where guests have gathered at ease on the terrace next to the burbling fountain in which baby lettuces are being washed, there to enjoy the food and wine served them by this stylish American couple.
But all around these seemingly fortunate people, the forces of darkness are gathering: The year is 1939; World War II approaches. And the paradise Tim and Sara have made is being besieged from within as Tim - closely based on Parrish - is about to suffer the first of the circulatory attacks that will cause him to lose his leg to amputation.

A wonderful book, beautifully written. The descriptions are particularly lovely.
    Five Stars
    nice copy, great service
I've always enjoyed Fisher's memoirs and would recommend most of them
I've always enjoyed Fisher's memoirs and would recommend most of them. I finished only two chapters and started the third before I had to put it down. As Kirkus remarks in their full review (not the part posted here) it's easy to see why she did not consider herself a novelist.
    Poorly written and uninteresting
Sadly, I could not get through this book. The writing is clunky and suspense's, and the characters are not appealing.

    the Old west
Where does Silently Beats the Drum rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
one of the best I probably finished it in 2 days. worth it
What was one of the most memorable moments of Silently Beats the Drum?
The gun fights and Injun fights
    Which scene was your favorite?
when Buffalo Hump goes to talk with the Sioux medecine man
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
there was a woman who cried over her child. I felt that.
    Any additional comments?
the book was action packed. The narrator was very talented but went too fast sometimes. Benton really likes writing odd characters and then blowing em away
    Surprise
Would you consider the audio edition of Silently Beats the Drum to be better than the print version?
Yes not much doubt about it. This is because the dude reading it is a very good actor or at least sounds like it so he brings the characters into full view for me. You know a lot of what I buy sounds like a guy reading a story. This one isn't like that It sounds more like one of those early radio shows or something hard to put my finger on it but it was different and better for it
Who was your favorite character and why?
there must have been 35 or 40 characters in this thing. I liked the bad guy the Indian warrior and the old black slave. there's plenty to go around
    Which scene was your favorite?
look there are 40 odd chapters in this and you get your money's worth each to his own, I guess I don't want to spoil it for anybody else
If you could rename Silently Beats the Drum, what would you call it?
nthin much silent about this story. Off the top of my head I'd call it the Last Man Standing
    Any additional comments?
Benton is good but he tries and covers too much you got black slaves and Indians and white psycho and a one leg hero and a bunch of women and kids in there. Theres great fight scenes and good friends but all the words about cooking and food I don't know if that helps the story.

    Fast-paced and engrossing book!
Prince of Eridu is a great book, well worth the time and money. Look elsewhere for slowly plodding, dry drama. This is an easy page turner with engaging characters and an plot that draws you in. As I approached the end I actually started really slowing down in the hopes of delaying the inevitable end of the book. I think it would be well-suited for conversion into to a Hollywood screenplay, too.
I hope to see more installments from this author. If you are interested enough to read this review, there's a very good probability you will like this book. Get it now or at least put it on your wish list.
    Engaging Story
I loved this engaging story. The writing was great and I smiled several times at the intergection of modern language in a 1700's setting. Great story to listen too at work or when your mind can be engaged in other things. SMO
    Amazing book
This book was really great to listen to. It captures you and leaves you wanting for more.
I quite enjoyed the story. Creative and fun.
Pretty fun read, or listen as it were. Now on to the next book. The author is pretty creative. I liked it.
    Fun read, interesting setting
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this book to others, since it had great insights to a culture that was new to me. I love being "transported" to other worlds I've never encountered. In this case, it was ancient middle east. I know very little of the setting, but felt the author had a good amount of details that made it authentic.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I love the main character. He was funny, clever and dumb all at the same time. Hmm, pretty much the same way I see myself... I guess thats why I like him. What does that say about me?
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The climax where the main character had to do some rescuing (don't want to give away the ending) was a lot of fun.

Despite Steinbeck's protests and her father's misgivings, she wrangles a job as Ricketts' sketch artist and begins drawing the strange and wonderful sea creatures he pulls from the waters of the bay.
Unbeknownst to Margot, her father is also working with Ricketts. He is soliciting the biologist's advice on his most ambitious and controversial project to date: the transformation of the Row's largest cannery into an aquarium. When Margot begins an affair with Ricketts, she sets in motion a chain of events that will affect not just the two of them but the future of Monterey as well.
Alternating between past and present, Monterey Bay explores histories both imagined and actual to create an unforgettable portrait of an exceptional woman, a world-famous aquarium, and the beloved town they both call home.
