Publisher's Summary:
LillieBeth Hazkit is thrust into an adult world of evil and of evil men. She has to grow up much too fast, learning of love, of tribulation and of facing her demons with fire, fury, anger, and blossoming maturity.
Growing up in the Ozarks in 1920, she loves everyone and in her 12 years of wisdom believes all people are endowed with love and kindness. Her daddy gets home only on weekends, so she and her mama take care of their small, rented farm. She has become very adept with her precious .22 rifle helping Mama put meat on the table.
She feels compelled to obey the command to love our neighbors, a scripture she learned at her little country church and school house. It comes as an immense shock when she learns the friendless, crazy old man down the road does not want to be her friend and it becomes her mission to convince him that she loves him and wants to be a good neighbor.
Members Reviews:
Anne of Green Gables and a young Annie Oakley embodied in one endearing main character!
A sweet story of an uncommon friendship. Richly developed characters in a well researched setting of the Ozark hills during the days of prohibition. I loved the story and characters! Highly recommend!
READ THIS BOOK!! you will not regret it
what a great coming of age story of a 12 yr old girl. if you have any curiosity about what it was like to be poor, smart and innocent growing up with Ozark hillbillies in 1920 this story will send joy into your heart and soul. the author captures guilelessness and simplicity of this young girl who has a strong faith in the Lord and doing the right thing as instructed by Christ teachings. you learn bits of mid-American history of the Civil War, about the outside world of prohibition encroaching into the mountains and meet the famous Chicago gangster Frank Nitti. then there are the friendship stones. what they mean brings a lump in your throat and joy to your heart. the simple acts of kindness done for the grumpy and dangerous hermit reminds us today it's the little everyday things we do that count.
this is not a goody-two shoes story there are bad guys and evil. awakening of sexual desire, good neighbors and not nice ones too. a good story. I am glad I read it and you will be too.
An enjoyable and amazing surprise
It was strongly recommended that I get this book and although I do not usually read this genre, I got it to read. I am amazed, surprised, and downright flabbergasted that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. It is not even close to my normal scifi, but it had plenty of action and excitement to hold my interest.
LillieBeth Hazkit is a 12-year-old girl growing up in 1920 Ozark Mountains, trying to make sense of the backwoods, poverty-stricken world she inhabits and that is what makes this historical fiction, but it reads like fact. So much so, that while I could not put the book down look up some things, I had to mark certain pages for later review to verify the history. I had trouble finding out about the town of Oasis, Missouri, but I did find it buried under the water of Table Rock Lake. This is a part of U.S. that I am familiar with and it rings so true that the authors must have a deep connection to the Ozarks. I bookmarked the glossary at the back, not only for referral, but because it was, at times, downright laugh-out-loud funny.
This young girl is trying to grow up and become a woman. That is a hard task made harder by hard times.
