On 28th June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his morganatic wife, Sophie Chotek, were shot dead in broad daylight on a crowded street in Sarajevo. The murder of a relatively unknown archduke in a remote Bosnian city might well have been quickly forgotten were it not for the fact that this seemingly minor event ignited a spark that would explode into one of the bloodiest conflicts in history. Within four years, over sixteen million people from one hundred countries would lie dead on the battlefields of the First World War.

    Good, but I expected more
I'm not sure I'm the best person to rate this. I have been teaching history for 42 years and my particular specialty is 19th and 20th century Europe. I don't usually read fiction but I thought I would give this trilogy a try because the causes of WWI and the collapse of the great dynasties is a great passion of mine. I think historians might find this trilogy interesting if they are fiction lovers; if they are used to nonfiction the conversations and musings of familiar historical figures can be irritating, at best. For all those who do not know the facts about these unfortunate people, I think the trilogy is an excellent beginning. There is no doubt that Christina Croft knows her history and tries to pack a good deal of it into each chapter, hoping to bring her characters to life for those who do not already know them. In short, I recommend them to the fiction lover.

I asked for this series of books as gifts and I was excited to read them. I knew the stories of the royal families and their part in world War I or The Great War. But What I found was a well written and researched book telling the story of not just the personal sides of their lives but of the times and places they lived. I was expecting a good story, but when I read the first few pages of the first book in the series, I realized I was reading a piece of literature, with the descriptive style of a poet, reminding me of the first time I read Pride and Prejudice. I felt I was with the people in the story and looking into their world. For any fans of historical fiction this series of books gives the reader a believable look at the people involved in The First World War.
    A Captivating and Ground-Breaking Book!
This is an amazing read for so many reasons! WWI is not always an easy subject to read about, due to sheer volume. Christina manages to bring the material to us in an intelligent and clear form. Not an easy feat, by any means. In addition, each historical character is clearly researched, but is also treated with respect, compassion and dignity. Give yourself a chance to allow your mind and heart to re-consider these men and women with the new light shed on them through this book. Finally, here is an author that presents an in-depth portrait of so many of the royal cousins - Tsar Nicholas, Franz Ferdinand, Emperor Franz Josef, Karl, and so many more. Particularly interesting is her ability to really capture Kaiser Wilhem! If you ever wanted to be a fly on the wall in the great palaces across Europe prior to WWI, here's your chance! The lively and realistic conversations between the characters will captivate you. The vivid landscapes and happenings will draw you in completely.

    Far From Her Best
Over the years I have listened to many books by this lady but this is probably one of her worst. There are whole sections describing Victorian medical operations and long drawn out descriptions of wartime and nursing bearing no resemblance to the plot which is slow and plodding. She has written many great books. But this is not one of them

    Another great Ian Ross tale.
This is the latest in the series of Rome under Constantine in the northern western areas of the Empire. The story is good, and the narration is absolutely superb: a masterful performance. I look forward the next in the series, maybe later in 2017 or early 2018. Well done!

    Highly Recommended
This is based on true events, and tells the story of a young German man's involvement as a drafted soldier at the end of WWII. The story reveals details about a piece of history that I have never read about before. I could not put the book down, and will not forget the main character and his harrowing experiences. The author makes the action flow naturally, and draws the reader in with a well-developed progression of events. I could easily picture this as a movie. I recommend this book to those interested in WWII history, and to any reader who enjoys a great story.
    A different but crucial perspective
I really enjoyed this book as there are many on the Holocaust but few from a German's point of view. So often we read how brutal the Germans were that we forget there were some who were opposed to the war. While the story had its share of sorrows, the overall feeling is one of finding goodness even in the most difficult of situations.
The writing itself was compelling and it held my interest. I read it in one sitting. I would greatly encourage the reader to read to the end as it is well worth it. I felt a sense of humility and compassion among the main characters that it was truly a fulfilling read made even better by the fact it is based on a true story. Well done!
    A Must Read!
The writer tells the heart breaking story of two young boys taken from their home against their will to fight when they don't want to. This story is a real eye opener for a truth and reality that needs to be told. It certainly enlightened me on what really went on with Hitler's evil ways. Save me twice is a personal account of the catastrophic historic event of the Holocaust that educated me beyond the history books and Holocaust museum.
A Unique and Compelling WWII Story
Won this book in an Amazon Giveaway drawing - and I enjoyed it! What it lacks in literary quality it more than makes up for in authentic storytelling. Save Me Twice presents a unique and compelling story of a young SS conscript in the waning months of WWII, and facing the war's aftermath. It offers a rare insight, seldom captured. Well worth reading.
    Amazing and Astounding
I really appreciated reading this book because it showed me the perspective that I never saw before. It was enjoyable to read as story unfolds and suspenseful to keep me interested from the beginning to end. Also, the facts and informations were astounding, never have known them if I didn't read this book.

    A Fun Escape
I thoroughly enjoyed Marcia Maxwell's colorful story and I looked forward to hearing what Isabelle would be up to next when I made my daily commute walks. A lot of research clearly went into this historical faction novel! The descriptions of the equestrian scenes too were accurate and enjoyable. Some have commented on occasional anachronistic vocabulary/phrases and to that I say big effing deal. It's a story. Of fiction.
I appreciated the versatility in the narrator's reading voices, I found myself wanting her to bring down Isabelle's speaking voice from what seemed to be a a fussy falsetto to Isabelle's "regular" first person voice. This will make more sense when you buy the Audible book, which I recommend without reservation.

    Echoland
Set during a fascinating time in Irish history, this is a mystery and thriller rolled into one. Germany has marched across Europe and has England and Ireland firmly in it's sights.
In Dublin opinions are divided, embrace Germany or side with the hated British. Paranoia and suspicion are rife with an expected attack against Ireland imminent.
Paul Duggan is working in G2, Ireland's Military Intelligence Division, his job is to monitor suspected German spies and their allies. He is teamed with Special Branch Detective Peter Glifford as part of a joint operation investigating a German national when he is asked to look into the disappearance of a family member at his uncle Timmy Monaghans request. Timmy is a ranking government minister and Paul's uncle. In the course of his investigation he uncovers a side of Timmy Monaghan that he never suspected.
There is an evocative feel for time and place in this well crafted novel. Both the mystery, and thriller componment are equally developed. The descriptions of Ireland at that time are visceral, and beautifully depicted. There is some wonderful repartee between the young, and in some ways naive Duggan and the more worldly wise Gifford.
Well worth a look at for this interesting time in Irish history.
    Very good book
This is a very good book about a time in Irish history that not much is written about. I enjoyed Joyce's writing and look forward to reading the other two books in the series.
Echoland - echoes of the sounds of wartime Dublin come to life
a book you could easily take on holiday . but you could read it at the poolside or in the sombre environs of the hotels library .
the book would feel equally at home in either location, Taken at its historiographical level the plot is plausible .The Dublin is carefully and punctiliously as paced as James Joyce's - such is the seamless intersection of streetscape and character chronologically . the characters individualistic and engaging and identifiable .Take it at whatever level you wish or wish it to take you.

The story is considered one of Howard's very best (and most brutal) and features rather significantly a feral dog named Slasher that wins the deep respect of Conan!

    A classic R. E. Howard novella.
A fast paced novella which reads like an excerpt from a special hell of the French and Indian War. Typical Howard, with no punches pulled, this is a fierce and visceral war story and vendetta. Deadly and vivid.
I first read this book in middle school
I read this book in 7th grade and still remember sitting around the lunch room table talking with my friends about the characters. I bought a copy of the Savage Sword of Conan comic at the shoppette at Camp Hovey in Korea and started reading Howard again after a long hiatus. The story is as fresh and exciting now as when I was a kid. My oldest just graduated basic at Fort Benning and has an entire Howard collection on his kindle. Love all of them.
    Timeless Classic
    Always a thoroughly enjoyable read.
    Robert E. Howard's universe beckons.
Will you heed the call of the frontier, and risk the monster's wrath?
Hold close your sword and axe, may cold steel hold you to truth.
    best look elsewhere
This is classic Robert E. Howard writing. He basically invented the 'Sword and Sorcery' genre. If you're looking for Pulitzer Prize stories, best look elsewhere. If you're looking for fast paced, well written, fun stories then this is your e-book.
    Five Stars
    Excellent reading for Conan fans!

Fenian's Trace is the tale of two lads raised as brothers in the west of Ireland during the early 1900s. Though they choose different paths when the rebellion comes, they both take a fancy to the spirited and alluring Maria upon her homecoming from America. It's a story told by Mr. Clancy, a gruff old Limerick publican who fancies himself as yet another in that grand tradition of Irish storytellers, though one who refuses to let his gentle inebriation or any distractful facts trouble his telling. It's a story of secrets and sacrifice, fathers and sons, love and loyalty. It's an Irish story.

    Heartbreaking and beautiful
This is a book which you sink back into your chair and just listen to .... allowing it to wash over you in musical waves of texture and poetry. I started listening to it and by the time 45 minutes were past, I already hoped that there were more books out. Maybe it's just the narrator's voice.
When I first started listening to this, I thought it would be a Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn sort of book. But it isn't. It's a story of two young men growing up during the first world war and the Irish Troubles. Connor is the quiet one, dreaming of traveling the world while keeping his head down and slogging through life. Rory is his brother, hotheaded and believing in the Irish tales of Brian Boru and the Fenian raids; wanting to fight for Irish independence with the Sinn Fein, the rise of the IRA. It's this hotheadedness that shapes the story. Love also shapes this story. Love of country, of history, of family, and of a girl. Its about sacrifices, two generations of families intertwined by politics and by love, and the history they have to live with.
This story will bring tears to your eyes and a lump to your throat. Well written, well narrated, I look forward to more by this author and narrator. Please!!
Moving historical fiction set in 1900's Ireland!
    Any additional comments?
Fenian's Trace is an outstanding well written historical fiction story by Sean P. Mahoney. Through its pages we learn of one small village's struggles with the British occupation of Ireland leading up to the Easter Rebellion and ultimately Ireland's independence in 1921.
The story begins in 1901 Limerick with two young brothers who desire to do nothing more than hitch a ride on a canal boat carting barrels of Guinness. As the years roll by, they eventually succeed in riding on that boat and along the way they meet some very interesting men who enjoy telling stories of Irish heroes and legends. As teens, their interests start to veer in different directions and they fall in love with the same girl. Eventually they choose different paths dealing with the rebellion. One passionately acts out against the English occupation (like all of the great legends before him), and the other takes the path of a pacifist, all the while remaining loyal and true to his family and the other villagers. It goes without saying that sacrifices are made which are utterly heartbreaking. [The last 1/3 of the book is truly moving and brought me to tears more than once.]
I listened to the audible version of Finian's Trace narrated by Liam Carney, who is a well known and resepected actor. His warm husky voice and gravely tones were ideal to portray a gruff old Limerick pub owner who enjoys the grand tradition of Irish storytellers.

People Working Together after the Civil War
Would you consider the audio edition of A Wave from Mama to be better than the print version?
The audio was fantastic, the many voices were crisp and clear. The audio made the whole story light up.
The narrator had a distinctive voice for each person in the novel. I liked the audio version with the printed book, I used them together. With the audio the book was outstanding.
What did you like best about this story?
Listening to the audio made the characters come to life, and I was in the middle of the story not on the side lines.
Which character as performed by Antonio Reyes was your favorite?
I liked the character Moses, he was always helping Venture Simmons out when he got into trouble. I also liked Vent' s girl friend, with the audio I felt there was real love between them.
If you could take any character from A Wave from Mama out to dinner, who would it be and why?
If I could take a character out to dinner it would have to be Vent' s girl friend, she was friendly, a little shy at first but warmed up to others fairly easy.
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the book and audio, I learn about the building of the Booklyn Bridge, and about the Irish gangs. I also learned how hard the black people had to work to survive after President Lincoln freed them. Oh, yes one more thing the song 'Amazon Grace' was beautiful and was the high light of the Audio.
