Publisher's Summary:
Some see Britain as an ally; others look to Germany for a hopeful future while some wish to remain as neutral as possible. In this atmosphere of edgy uncertainty, a young lieutenant, Paul Duggan, is drafted into the army's intelligence division, G2, and put on the German desk.
Paul delves into the double-dealing worlds of spies and politics, where ruthlessness, deviousness and occasional violence prevail, before confronting a surprising secret that challenges everything he has grown up believing.
Critic Reviews:
"Brilliantly portrays the divided atmosphere at the time, full of edgy uncertainty." ( Irish Independent)

Echoland
Set during a fascinating time in Irish history, this is a mystery and thriller rolled into one. Germany has marched across Europe and has England and Ireland firmly in it's sights.
In Dublin opinions are divided, embrace Germany or side with the hated British. Paranoia and suspicion are rife with an expected attack against Ireland imminent.
Paul Duggan is working in G2, Ireland's Military Intelligence Division, his job is to monitor suspected German spies and their allies. He is teamed with Special Branch Detective Peter Glifford as part of a joint operation investigating a German national when he is asked to look into the disappearance of a family member at his uncle Timmy Monaghans request. Timmy is a ranking government minister and Paul's uncle. In the course of his investigation he uncovers a side of Timmy Monaghan that he never suspected.
There is an evocative feel for time and place in this well crafted novel. Both the mystery, and thriller componment are equally developed. The descriptions of Ireland at that time are visceral, and beautifully depicted. There is some wonderful repartee between the young, and in some ways naive Duggan and the more worldly wise Gifford.
Well worth a look at for this interesting time in Irish history.
Very good book
This is a very good book about a time in Irish history that not much is written about. I enjoyed Joyce's writing and look forward to reading the other two books in the series.
Echoland - echoes of the sounds of wartime Dublin come to life
a book you could easily take on holiday . but you could read it at the poolside or in the sombre environs of the hotels library .
the book would feel equally at home in either location, Taken at its historiographical level the plot is plausible .The Dublin is carefully and punctiliously as paced as James Joyce's - such is the seamless intersection of streetscape and character chronologically . the characters individualistic and engaging and identifiable .Take it at whatever level you wish or wish it to take you.
