As a rule, it is enough for a man to shave during his morning toilet so that he looks clean and well-groomed for the whole day. If he skips this shave for some reason — be it for convenience, lack of time, etc. — then this in and of itself is not a bad thing. However, this small neglect cannot be hidden for a long time, because the beard hair continues to grow inexorably, even during the sleep period at night, and therefore the bristly stubble sprouts again on the face by the next morning at the latest. Everyone is probably familiar with these banal statements, and they are only intended to serve as an introduction to the strange beard story that I learned from Jacobus Bertschinger.
The incident dates back to 1975, when the Meier family still lived in Hinwil at Wihaldenstrasse 10. Back then, Billy didn't have a full beard like he does today, and people were used to him shaving regularly. Jacobus was all the more surprised when he was confronted with the following event: It was in the summer of 1975 — to be exact, on Thursday, July 17th — when Billy left his house around 9 a.m., freshly shaved, and only returned home early the next day.
At this point, Jacobus was present in Meier's living room and was already waiting impatiently for Billy to return. He can still remember all the details very well, he assured me. After Billy entered the living room, Jacobus noticed two things in particular: Firstly, Billy appeared very tired and worn out, which was particularly reflected in his eyes, which he apparently had difficulty keeping open.
