Certain PFAS could accelerate the ageing process in middle-aged men. This is suggested by a study from Shanghai University, published in February in the journal 'Frontiers in Aging'. The researchers tested the blood of more than 300 participants for eleven different PFAS. They also analysed their DNA using various methods to detect epigenetic markers, in order to determine their biological age. Epigenetics deals, among other things, with ageing. Effect Observed Only in Men
The sample material from 326 persons over the age of 50 represents a random selection. It originates from a database of the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and was collected in 1999 and 2000.
Consequently, it comes as no surprise that PFAS were found in the blood of virtually all participants. A statistically significant correlation between a higher biological age and high levels of PFAS was found primarily in men aged between 50 and 64, as well as for the PFAS perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA). In women of the same age group and for other PFAS, only minor statistical effects were observed.
Two PFAS Already Banned
