A Study Through Matthew pt. 3: In the Wilderness

Listen Later

I. THE WILDERNESS

Matthew 4:1-2 NLT

1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. 2 For forty days and forty nights he fasted and became very hungry.

“The wilderness temptations (Matt 4:1–11; Mark 1:12–13; Luke 4:1–13) highlight Jesus’ role as the new Adam, and mirror Israel’s 40 years of wilderness wanderings. Like Adam and Eve, Jesus underwent temptation, but where they sinned, Jesus proved faithful.” - John McKinley, Faithlife Study Bible “Temptations of Jesus”

II. THE TEMPTATIONS

Matthew 4:3-11 NLT

Psalm 91:11-12 NLT

11 For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. 12 They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.

Deuteronomy 8:2-3 NLT

2 Remember how the LORD your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. 3 Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

Deuteronomy 6:16 NLT

You must not test the LORD your God as you did when you complained at Massah.

Deuteronomy 6:13 NLT

You must fear the LORD your God and serve him. When you take an oath, you must use only his name.

III. OVERCOMING TEMPTATION

Hebrews 4:15-16 NLT

15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

1. Prayer

Luke 22:40 NLT

There he told them, “Pray that you will not give in to temptation.”

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NLT

16 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

2. Know scripture

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

3. Holy Spirit

John 14:26 NLT

But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

Romans 8:26-28 NLT

26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. 27 But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. 28 And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

4. The church

James 4:7 NLT

So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
