Proverbs 18:21a, NLT - The tongue can bring death or life;
James 3:1-12, NLT - 1 Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way. 3 We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. 6 And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. 7 People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, 8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. 10 And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! 11 Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? 12 Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.
I. THE POWER TO DESTROY
Romans 1:28-32, NLT - 28 Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. 29 Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. 31 They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. 32 They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.
II. THE POWER TO BRING LIFE
Genesis 1:3, NLT - Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
1 Thessalonians 5:11, NLT - So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.
Proverbs 10:32, NLT - The lips of the godly speak helpful words, but the mouth of the wicked speaks perverse words.
Proverbs 12:18, NLT - Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.
III. HOW TO SPEAK LIFE
A. Fill Your Heart With The Things Of God
Philippians 4:8-9, NLT - 8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.
B. Slow To Speak
James 1:19, NLT - Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.
C. Speak Out Of Love
James 2:12-13, NLT - 12 So whatever you say or whatever you do, remember that you will be judged by the law that sets you free. 13 There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.
John 13:35, NLT - Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
