"Dear Mamas,
I was recently out shopping with my children and we encountered a family with a Down Syndrome child. The little boy was wanting to hug on my daughter, who is 7 years old and she was mortified and became rude and then I was mortified. I have failed somewhere on teaching a valuable lesson. I know Denise has mentioned her aunt lives at Holy Angels so I am hoping for some wisdom to pass on before this happens again." - Listener Submission
The hug was from a place of love and was meant as a gift for this little girl, even if it was misunderstood. There are many opportunities in our community to get involved and teach your children understanding and compassion for those that are different from them. We spoke to Mama Denise Vinson Arthur on Friday's "What Would Mama Do?" about the best ways to get involved and start this very important conversation with your children.
