  • Les Bowen: Philadelphia Eagles Talk w/ Mike Tanier of The Messenger | Bowen On The Birds | A2D Radio
On today’s episode, Les Bowen will be joined by Mike Tanier, currently of The Messenger, formerly of Bleacher Report, The New York Times, Football Outsiders, and a few other outlets. Tanier got a late sportswriting start, after a career as a high school math teacher. Les and Mike will talk about Mike’s journey, and how his unconventional background informs his writing. The Philadelphia Eagles finally made some long-awaited moves at linebacker — Will they be enough? K’Von Wallace, down to maybe his last chance, seems to be having a good camp. But another touted draft pick of yore, Davion Taylor, has been shown the door as the Birds prepare to open their preseason Saturday evening in Baltimore. The Eagles have signed Myles Jack and Zach Cunningham to help out the depth at linebacker, as Nakobe Dean suffered an ankle injury, will Myles Jack be a starter right away? Also, back in the good old days, Mike and Les had to walk 10 miles uphill each way to get to training camp! Now camping is more like glamping. (Les shakes fist at cloud.) The two will discuss the changes that have happened to Philadelphia Eagles' training camps.

  • 2023 NHL Metropolitan Division Predictions: Part 2 | Hockey Happy Hour
The New York Rangers are heading into the 2023/2024 season as one of the favorites to not only win the Metropolitan Division but to win the Eastern Conference. They had a very disappointing loss in round 1 to the New Jersey Devils in the NHL Playoffs last season. There were some changes in the franchise since the series loss. They fired head coach Gerard Gallant and hired Peter Laviolette in the summer. Some of the roster changes include the additions of Blake Wheeler, Nick Bonino and Erik Gustafsson. The Rangers also had a good draft, being able to select Gabe Perrault with the 23rd overall. Can this quick retool help the Rangers finally get back to the Stanley Cup Finals and win their first Cup since 1994? Now the team on the other side of the island, the New York Islanders, also had an underwhelming season. They finished their season 42-31-9 in the Metro Division before being booted out of the playoffs in round 1, falling to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 in the series. After acquiring and signing Bo Horvat to a long-term deal at the NHL Trade Deadline, the Islanders really didn't have a lot of cap space to make any major outside-the-organization signings. They were able to re-up on big-time pending unrestricted free agents Pierre Engvall, Iyla Sorokin and Semyon Varlamov to nice contracts. There are still moves that need to be made to get the Isles back under the cap ceiling. Are these deals going to be good enough to make the Islanders a legit threat in the Metro Division? This next team is definitely going to be a wild card, no pun intended. The Washington Capitals are coming off one of their worst seasons in a long time. They finished 35-37-10 and placed sixth in the Metro. Many writers and media heads are starting to think this Washington team may be getting ready to rebuild. Now the Capitals entered this summer firing the now-Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette and replaced him with Spencer Carbery. Carbery, who was a coach in the Washington farm system before, is taking over after a short stint as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Similarly to the Islanders’ roster, the Capitals are really tight to the salary cap. Washington may be closer to a rebuild for that reason, specifically. The only moves that the Caps were able to make are signing free agent Max Pacioretty, who’s coming off a major Achilles injury, and signing winger Tom Wilson to a six-year extension through 2030-2031. The Capitals also had a great first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft, selecting Ryan Leonard at pick eight and Andrew Cristall at pick 40. Even if this team is a bit older right now, the Capitals are setting to make the rebuild or retool quick and easy.

  • Philadelphia Phillies Go 5-2 | Here’s The Thing with Mitch Williams | A2D Radio
On today’s episode of “Here's The Thing,” filling in for Thomas Arnone, Michael Chromiak and former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Mitch Williams discuss the Phillies as they end a great week by going 5-2. The Phillies won their series over the Miami Marlins and the Kansas City Royals. The Phillies host the Washington Nationals for four games to start the week and the Minnesota Twins for three games to end the week. After taking blame for the loss on Wednesday, Trea Turner returned to Citizens Bank Park on Friday to multiple standing ovations from the Phillies crowd. On Saturday, he gave the crowd even more reasons to cheer as he hit a go ahead 3-run home-run and followed that up with an RBI double to add on. Trea is riding a 3-game hitting streak as we open a new week. Trea had a rough series in Miami despite the team playing pretty well. The Phillies themselves took 3 out of 4 games and honestly should have won the game they lost. The Phillies bullpen could’t hold a 3 run lead late in the game and finally an error from Turner gave the Marlins the win. Turner also came up to the plate in extra innings with runners on 2nd and 3rd and a chance to blow the game open but couldn’t get a hit to do that. After the weekend series against the Royals, Trea Turner is back. Join Michael and MItch and let them know if you Agree or Disagree to that statement. Michael and Mitch will also look ahead at the upcoming series against the Nationals and Twins. Can the Phillies take 6 out of 7, or even sweep the week with these mediocre and bad teams coming in. To round things out, Michael Chromiak and Mitch Williams are going to have a catch. Not literally…but Tommy will be throwing some questions to Mitch who will fire back with some raw thoughts. Join the discussion LIVE!!!
