The last three years, our minds have been consumed by a public health emergency. Needless to say, we have had to find a new normal that probably hasn’t felt all that normal. One of the main focuses has been our our mental wellness considering how much we’ve had to deal with. In keeping up with our minds, have we lost focus on our physical health? It certainly feels like it.
Of all ethnic groups in the US, Black men’s health is in danger. While others may be staying constant, and some groups even seeing improvements as is the case with Black and White women, numbers for Black men are heading in the wrong direction. There may be many factors adding to these unfortunate statistics, but whatever the reason, change has to happen.
In the US, the healthcare and health insurance industries are big business. What this means for those needing care is that it ain’t as simple as one would assume. There probably isn’t much change that’s going to happen from those making the big bucks. So the change has to come from us, the consumers. But how do you start to effectuate change in a system you don’t truly understand?
Regardless of what corporate structures are in place, Black men have to take control of their own health without excuses. The typical directives of proper diet & routine exercise haven’t changed. Before things lead to an unfortunate demise, it’s time to follow suit. All this rhetoric seems easy until it’s time to actually do it. But only other option is to stop celebrating birthdays.
