There are some stories we watch on TV that seem to be only made-for-TV. Let’s say like a soap opera. A dash of fun, add some love, a heap of drama, and you have the perfect mix for a Saturday Lifetime movie premier. But few would imagine the stories of The Young & Restless, The Bold & The Beautiful or All My Children would be an actual real life story of a prominent American family. Meet the Murdaughs.
If you are from Hampton County, South Carolina, this probably isn’t news to you. However, to most other Americans, and maybe on an international scale, the Murdaugh family epitomizes the essence of white privilege. Wealth, class, status, and ancestry - another perfect recipe for a perfect disaster. Who could imagine the great impact of family with 100 years of political influence could have if their hearts and minds were aligned with good deeds instead of scandal?
But where did it all go wrong? Some may say nepotism was the ingredient that spoiled the pot. But is nepotism all bad? What is the point in gaining success if your family and friends aren’t able to prosper along with you? But to what lengths do we go to protect those who do wrong in spite of our love? Is it a fathers job to protect his family at all costs no matter the actions?
The same question could be asked of NBA star Ja Morant. Not the typical story of young black man growing up in a fatherless home. Actually the opposite considering his father’s presence on the sidelines in Memphis and throughout the league as his son leads the Grizzlies up and down the court. Does a father’s leadership end when a child becomes the financial leader in the family? Or does social media have such a grip on Gen Z that parental guidance holds no weight?
Another scandal to watch as we approach the one year post-Oscar slap of which was only just addressed by the slappee himself. After finally speaking out about the Oscar scuffle-less scuffle, Chris Rock broke his silence in his live Netflix special. Was it worth the wait? I’d liken it to a Floyd Mayweather fight that all gather around to see but it proves to not really live up to the hype. But I guess the views are all that matter.
