Being a superstar gotta be a hard job. Not being able to do basic everyday activities like grocery shopping, walking in the park or stopping at a gas station. Your lack of anonymity puts you in a category that most Americans will never understand. But it can’t be all bad.
Some of America’s biggest stars have droves of people, or as some would call fans, super fans, or “stans” that make being famous feel like royalty. Whether it’s the Beyhive, Rihnavy, or Tamartians, these people ban together to show support in many ways than one. To some it’s all an innocent enjoyment of entertainment. But to others, it presents the appearance of what some may call “cult-like”.
One definition of cult is stated as “a misplaced or excessive admiration for a particular person or thing.” If you know anything about these fan bases, excessive may be taking it easy. Just ask Kid Rock what happened when he made a comment about his opinion on Beyoncé’s singing ability. The swarm of the Beyhive was relentless! Let’s be real. No one was harmed. Maybe harassed for days or even weeks. But everyone remained safe. But what happens when online banter evolves into bullying and someone takes it too far?
When viewing from a spiritual realm, the thought of moving, or swarming, in this manner Dan be viewed as a form of idolatry. And we know religious scriptures say about idols. Are people being extreme in their view of fans? Or are fans being extreme in the celebration of these American “Idols”?
