There is not only religious but also scientific importance behind laying the seat. Actually there is magnetic power in the earth i.e gravity. When a person meditates and chants special mantras, a positive energy is generated inside him. If you have not laid any seat, then this energy gets absorbed in the earth and you do not get any benefit. That's why it is considered necessary to spread the seat during worship.
