Governor Greg Abbott is opening Texas tomorrow. This is good news for Texans.

The sad thing is that not only does Gov. Abbott believe he single-handedly is the one who gets to decide if Texas is open, he believes that he single-handedly gets to decide which businesses are open and which facial coverings must be worn by all Texans.

Today we take a walk down memory lane. When the pandemic first hit, Abbott, claimed that a statewide mask mandate was not in alignment with the views that Texas had on freedom and liberty. Then as the political pressure mounted, he calculated that his legacy would be better off if he instituted a statewide mask mandate similar to that of New York and California.

Abbott assumed that less emotional governors like Florida’s Ron DeSantis would be proved wrong and his unwillingness to have a statewide mask mandate would prove ill-informed and lead to more death. He was wrong. And it took him eight months of mandates to decide he was wrong.

Now, State Rep. Dustin Burrows is working desperately against the Texas Senate and the Texas Republican Party to pass legislation that endorses Abbott’s dictatorial handling of the pandemic.

The good news for Texans is that State Sen. Brian Birdwell, along with many Texas senators, is pushing legislation to end Abbott’s overreach. Right now, the only Republican senators who haven’t signed on to support Birdwell’s legislation are:
