Criminals are exploiting the Australian Business Number (ABN) system to smuggle drugs, tobacco, and other illegal goods into the country. By stealing legitimate businesses’ ABNs and identities, they pose as these companies on import documents to slip illicit cargo past authorities. To appear more credible, they’re even creating fake websites that mimic the targeted businesses.
Phil speaks with freight forwarder Kelly Crossley, who says ABN fraud is widespread. She regularly flags suspicious shipments with Australian Border Force and notifies affected businesses.
