Ever wondered about the HUI in aujourd’hui?

* AUJOURD’HUI – à+le jour de hui – means TODAY in French.

* HUI used to be HOI. Note the similarity between HOI and Spanish HOY which also means today, and HOY DÍA (nowadays), all related to HODIE in Latin.

* HOI became HUI, au jour d’hoi became au jour d’hui – at the day that we are – and then became what we know today – AUJOURD’HUI

Expression courante

au jour d’aujourd’hui – at the day of today – very common pleonasm these days. I translate it by ‘Nowadays’ in English.
