Learning the art of delegation and letting go of our micro-managing tendencies is one of the most challenging -- and rewarding -- aspects of building a business in which you're dangerously capable of wearing all the hats.

If you don't challenge yourself to learn this art, those hats start to look a bit worn at best and downright silly at worst. The higher you stack them, the heavier your head becomes, and eventually some of them start falling off. Either way, people are going to notice, and you know damn well most of them look far better on someone else.

The practice of Who Not How can only be learned through doing. If you have the courage to do it, you'll eventually find a few Whos you simply can't imagine living without.

Episode 068 | Dr. Courtney Herbert is an accomplished board-certified dermatologist with extensive experience in medical and cosmetic dermatology and owner of FDL Dermatology and FDL Dermatology Consulting in Arlington, VA.

For more than 12 years, FDL Dermatology accepted medical insurance. When the COVID pandemic disrupted life in 2020, Dr. Herbert, like many physicians, shifted temporarily to telemedicine. Much to her delight, the lack of time constraints allowed her to spend more time with her patients, get to know them better, and address all their dermatologic needs at once.

In late 2020, FDL Dermatology stopped accepting medical insurance and made the switch to a direct pay model. She and her staff enjoy focusing completely on their patients during longer, more personalized appointments.

Through this transition, Dr. Herbert gained practical insight into what works, what doesn’t, and what dermatologists need to consider before making this significant change. The experience reinforced an important truth: direct-pay dermatology can be highly effective when it is designed thoughtfully and grounded in real-world clinical practice.

Her latest venture, FDL Dermatology Consulting, grew out of conversations with colleagues—dermatologists who were asking the same questions she once did:
Is leaving traditional insurance possible?
How do I transition without destabilizing my practice?
How do I communicate changes to patients?
What does a sustainable direct-pay model really look like?

Episode 067 | Dr. Amanda Hill—Founder of RENEW Longevity & Medical Aesthetics—is a board-certified dermatologist specializing in longevity medicine, regenerative aesthetics, and precision-based care. She completed her dermatology residency at Stanford University (with Dr. Lewellis!), where she served as Chief Resident, and later served as Chief of Dermatology at Nellis Air Force Base, caring for service members and their families.

Through her work with RENEW, Dr. Hill integrates metabolic health, hormone optimization, and skin longevity into comprehensive, individualized treatment plans. She has advanced training in bioidentical hormone therapy and regenerative aesthetics and is currently completing the A4M Longevity Medicine Fellowship (Spring 2026). Dr. Hill is an active member of Longevity Docs, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), and the American Board of Dermatology (ABD).

Dr. Hill believes great skin is a reflection of overall health—not an isolated concern. With expertise spanning dermatology, nutrition, and regenerative medicine, she created RENEW to help women stop guessing and start healing. Her approach is thoughtful, data-driven, and deeply personal, focusing on how patients feel as much as how they look.

Episode 062 | Bonnie Hodge, MD is a board certified dermatologist originally from Meridian, Mississippi. She specializes in skin cancer detection and treatment, management of psoriasis, acne, rosacea, atopic dermatitis, other common inflammatory conditions, and more complex conditions such as autoimmune and bullous dermatoses, pigmentation disorders, vitiligo, and prurigo nodularis.
As a recent residency graduate, she has undergone extensive training in cutting-edge, evidence-based treatment strategies. She worked under several world-renowned experts in psoriasis, melanoma detection, alopecia, and pigmentary disorders.

Dr. Hodge caught my eye through her rising, homegrown stardom on social media. As of the publication of this episode, she has amassed over 54K followers on TikTok!

Her story is a great example of what can happen when you have the courage to leverage your expertise by consistently putting yourself in front of a camera and into the algorithm. Given the amount of misinformation our patients are routinely exposed to, the more board certified dermatologists who are willing to do this in an engaging, educational, and entertaining way, the better! 

Dr. Hodge graduated with a degree in Biochemistry from Mississippi State University. She received an MD from the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine and completed her dermatology residency at The University of Alabama, Birmingham.

Outside the office, you'll find her enjoying life with her husband, Sonny, a sports medicine physician, and their son, Walker, alongside their canine companion named, Sipsey.
