After the UI announced it was closing its inpatient eating disorder clinic, it released a statement explaining the closure and what would fill its place. According to the statement, the closure allowed the reallocation of resources to focus on aiding patients with “acute mental health care needs.”
According to a statement provided by the UI Hospitals and Clinics media relations team, the “eating disorder treatment team works with patients to determine the best level of care for their needs, whether it is through our outpatient clinic, partial hospitalization services, or inpatient services.”
Despite this, a deep gap in treatment options is felt across the state of Iowa. Hear from former patients on the impacts of removing the only inpatient clinic in the state.
Workers at the Iowa City Clinton Street Starbucks voted 25-0 in favor of unionizing in May because of issues with management. This was the largest unanimous union vote across Starbucks locations nationally.
Employees say it was easy to build consensus because of their shared experiences working chaotic shifts.
Starbucks shift supervisor Abi Scheppmann said she had never been able to address problems with management in retail jobs before until she became part of a union.
“Usually you just kind of just have to shut up and take it,” she said. “But it's really cool being able to have a collective voice and see, especially some of the younger baristas, like experience standing up for themselves."

The University of Iowa is selling Mayflower Residence Hall after internal reviews revealed that the dorm was the last choice for first year students. For past residence however, Mayflower is a beloved place where they found community and made long lasting relationships.
Tori Bauer lived in Mayflower from 2019 to 2021. She said the apartment style living of Mayflower made her feel safer in the pandemic.
Sam Stewart lived in Mayflower between 2010 and 2012. He initially was concerned about his assignment to the dorm after hearing about its bad reputation, but ended up loving it.
Beth Tunis, a Mayflower resident assistant from 2007 to 2008, met her future husband at the dorm, where they both worked as RAs.
“I drove by Mayflower yesterday and there were probably 50 students waiting for the bus, and it's this bittersweet moment because it's so exciting that they're in Mayflower because we lived there, but then to know that this could be the last set of students that live there,” Torchia said. “It's a bittersweet, bittersweet moment.”

This episode details how professors are responding to AI technology.
Russell Chun, associate professor at Hofstra University’s Lawrence Herbert School of Communication in New York, said it is difficult to create one policy to regulate AI for a whole university because every discipline is different.
"I think it's exciting technology, personally, and I think that we kind of all have to and there's so many use cases that are still coming out, right? People are still figuring out, oh, how can I use it? How should I use it? And I think we have to keep an open mind," Chun said.
Several University of Iowa professors have started incorporating AI into classes.
Pamela Bourjaily, UI Tippie College of Business associate professor of accounting instruction, created an assignment last spring where Chat GPT generated a memo and students had to revise it using ChatGPT or on their own.
"Over the summer, I looked at the results, and I learned that the students who performed highest on that assignment, either did not use chat GPT, they did their own writing, or they did a lot of prompting of the ChatGPT and of treating it like a Google search."
Tyler Bell, an assistant professor in the University of Iowa College of Engineering, created an entire course about AI's uses and ethical concerns.
