What we want right now can easily become more important than what we want most, especially when we’re tired, depleted, or tempted to believe that satisfying a desire will finally make us whole. The story of Esau’s birthright and Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness point us toward a better way: recognize what desire is doing, refuse to let it redefine what’s valuable, and choose the ultimate over the immediate.
