This passage describes the dramatic conversion of Saul (later known as Paul). Saul, a fierce persecutor of Christians, is on his way to Damascus when he encounters a blinding light and hears the voice of Jesus asking, "Why are you persecuting me?" Temporarily blinded, Saul is led into the city where a disciple named Ananias, following God's instruction, heals him and baptizes him. Saul immediately begins preaching about Jesus, astonishing those who knew of his past. Facing threats from both Jews and skeptical Christians, Saul escapes Damascus and eventually goes to Jerusalem. There, Barnabas helps the apostles accept him. Saul continues to preach boldly until threats force him to return to Tarsus. The passage ends noting that the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria enjoyed peace and continued to grow, strengthened by the Holy Spirit.
