July 20, 2020Anjaney No fearToday I had a very endearing call by 8 year old Anjaney. Anjaney shared with me that he is in second grade and that his parents come to America from India. His favorite hobby is soccer and his favorite soccer players are Renaldo and Messi which he aspires to be like when he grows up. When I asked Anjaney what his fears are he said that he did not have any fears. The thing that is so special about talking with kids of Anjaney's age is how purely honest and authentic they are. It reminds me how when we are children the entire world is an open opportunity and possibility. As we get older we impose on ourselves learned self doubt and limiting beliefs. When you talk with a kid like Anjaney he reminds us to be brave because its the best way to be in the world. Chasing your dreams and life adventures. When I meet first generation immigrants who have come to the United States to pursue their dreams and provide new opportunities for their children I am always filled with admiration on encouragement for the human spirit - being willing to take risks and go to great lengths to find something new. Thinking about the top athletes that Anjaney mentioned is that they have total belief in themselves and their capabilities. In the moments that matter most in the game they are able to make the critical plays and not succumb to fear. When we work hard a believe in ourselves we can achieve great things. Thank you Anjaney for these necessary reminders....more7minPlay
July 19, 2020AJ Pushed over the edgeA.J. called in today with his story about fear as he recalled the night that he became homeless. A.J. was running low on money and knew that he was not going to be able to afford rent that month. He had been pursuing his dreams and investing in his own business. When he approached his mentor he confessed that he was about to be homeless and things had not gone as planned. A.J. told his mentor that he was going to be probably heading back to his home town to live with his mother due to the financial strains. His mentor advised him not to go home and that the only way A.J. would find the success that he was looking for would be too tough it out, mentally and physically by suffering the challenges of homelessness while he pursued his dreams. A.J. did not back down from the challenge and faced his fear of being homeless. He reminds us that even when we are at our low points that this is only part of our story and not our whole story. A.J. always closes the speeches that he gives with a poem by Guillaume Apollinaire so he shared it with us in closing as well. It is a fitting poem because A.J. was pushed to the extreme and to the edge and he is now flying....more18minPlay

It wasn’t until his roommates kept suggesting that he come eat with them that be began to recognize the patterns of not eating. Gabriel talks about our cultural standards of beauty, online therapy, hypnotherapy, how important it can be to have friends to talk with and how typically conditions like eating disorders are symptoms and not the root cause. Gabriel talks about being able to get to a place where he could have the difficult conversation with his parents about the deeper underlying causes of pain and trauma. July 17, 2020Daniel A dads loveDaniel spent over 30 plus years serving as a chaplain ministry for the United States military. Today Daniel shares a very personal and powerful story about family and healing. When Daniel's daughter was diagnosed with the bipolar it began to shed light on why she was suffering with such pain that was causing self harm in what Daniel refers to as having a cascading effect. Dianel speaks about how he realized how he needed to show up for his daughter and his entire family as a “dad” and not a counselor. I imagine this being such a hard thing to do, because being a dad or mom all you want to do is save your child. The pressures that we put on ourselves as a parent are tremendous and when we do not have quick fixes for things it can leave us feeling helpless. Daniel talks about a metaphor of being on a boat and realizing that in order to be able to be there to help his daughter and the rest of his family he also needed to become more mindful of his own condition. You can’t help someone else if you are also drowning. Daniel’s story is so amazing that I hope everyone takes as much away from his experiences and wisdom as I did. If anyone is struggling and needs someone to reach out to please look up Daniel’s information in the links included. July 16, 2020Ed The healing power of music and gardeningEd is amazing. He has music and such good vibes running though his soul and he exudes so much positivity. I feel grateful that I was able to speak with him today because just like Ed, I have grown up with Dyslexia. Ed shares his story of what it was like to try and go to school and make sense of the world when what we are doing fundamentally just isn’t making sense. Ed worked hard each day in school and still came home with C and C+. When the schools and doctors tried to convince his mom that he should be on Adderall or Ritalin his mom rejected the idea. She knew that drugs was not the answer for Ed. Instead she tapped into his passion and interests and put musical instruments in front of Ed. Ed talks about how no one learns the same way, how important nature and farming can be, the power of music, dyslexia and the work he does to help advance the dyslexic causes and so much more. Music was what helped Ed realize that he wasn’t defective. I really loved speaking with Ed and because he quoted Paul Simon during our talk and how important music and arts can be for the human soul, I will leave us with this PS quote: "Medicine is magical and magical is art”.
