Paul confronts a church proud of its knowledge but careless with its love. In 1 Corinthians 8, food offered to idols becomes the test case: knowing idols are nothing means little if that knowledge wounds a weaker brother’s conscience. Chapter 9 shows Paul practising what he preaches, laying aside his rightful apostolic privileges for the gospel’s sake. Together the passages press one question on us: will we insist on our rights, or surrender them in love so others are built up, not torn down?
