Welcome Back Y'all to Adjacent!

Today we have a real treat. We are welcoming in our friend from high school, Melissa "Missy" Dismukes Pore. Missy takes us on a journey as she is exploring the next frontier, space. Missy is a high school teacher in Virginia that is helping schools to build a space program for high schoolers. She is working with Nasa and the University of Louisiana (Raging Cajuns) to build satellites that schools can interact with that will be launched from the international space station. You will feel her excitement and passion for teaching and connecting young learners to space and exploration. Come be adjacent with us to this great innovator, Missy!

Welcome back y'all to Adjacent!

You are in for an adventure today! Emily is one of our closest friends. She shares hilarious stories about growing up in Tyler, Texas, how she stays close with her family, and tales of being a southern gal. She is so open about struggles she has faced in a heart-warming tale of tackling challenges. Her Texas twang will draw you in, but don't be fooled by her sweet sing-songy voice. You will love her so much, you will be asking for her to have her own show.

Hey Yall

We want to welcome Dr. Christian Bolden.

In our previous episode Mary Wynn shared the story about a student name Christian Bolden. We tracked him down to hear the story from his perspective and we were even more moved.

Christian Bolden earned his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Central Florida and Masters in Sociology from Texas State University-San Marcos. His areas of research include gang histories and processes, mass incarceration, and human trafficking. His recent book Out of the Red: My Life of Gangs, Prison, and Redemption received the 2020 Frank Tannenbaum Outstanding Book Award from the American Society of Criminology’s Division of Convict Criminology. Dr. Bolden also received the 2021 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from the College of Liberal Arts at Texas State University San Marcos and the 2021 Faculty Senate Award for Research from Loyola University New Orleans. In 2012-2013, Dr. Bolden was the “Futurist in Residence” research fellow for the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit.

Grab his book, we will be discussing in book club!

Today Shelly and Jody share their most recent books they have read. This week, Shelly read: Failure is an Option by Jon Benjamin. Shelly also read Tell Me How it Ends by Valerie Luiselli. It is a book about what happens to children in the US that immigrate to the US.

This week Jody read: The Teacher by Freida McFadden. A psychological thriller of a married couple that teach at a local high school, and the problems they face as the wife finds out the hidden secrets of her husband. If you want a podcast to connect with this book, listen to Betrayal. They both have many connections. . Jody also read Girl Alone by Black Pierce. This book . Finally, Jody read The Way I Heard It by Walter Fulcher. . It is based on tall tales of the Big Bend area of Texas.
