  • Race and Adoption
    Should social workers be hesitant at placing black children in white families or areas? Is racist abuse only a cultural problem for adoptive families? If so - what about online race issues? On todays show I’m going to play an extract from the One Adoption West Yorkshire Winter Conference on race and adoption that I was invited to speak at to discuss these and other issues.
    I also have a number of seminars around this theme including, ‘Beyond Black Lives Matter and transracial adoption’, do please get in contact if you are interested in booking me to speak at your event.

  • Learning from the adoptee experience
    Learning from the past is important to help us make decisions in the future. In this weeks episode we continue the conversation from episode 3 discussing more insights, and experiences that involve young adoptees.
    ‘Chosen?’ is an anthology of writing by adopted young people out on 13th March, I’m excited to welcome onto the show Charlotte Ansell and Janett Plummer the project organisers/editors along with Estelle one of the young people.
    Estelle reads the poem and talks openly and honestly about her adoption, what she remembers and how she feels about adoption today. There are so many wonderful insights about what lessons can be learnt concerning UK adoptions along with some beautiful messages for adoptive parents too.

  • Chosen? The voice of young adoptees
    It is important to hear the voice of young adoptees discuss there experiences to inspire others, educate society and help us develop better ways at serving their needs in their families, communities and governmentally. I’m excited to have Charlotte Ansell and Janett Plummer the project organisers/editors on the show along with Estelle one of the young people to discuss new work - ‘Chosen?’ an anthology of writing by adopted young people out in March.
    Estelle reads the poem and talks openly and honestly about her adoption, what she remembers and how she feels about adoption today. There are so many wonderful insights about what lessons can be learnt concerning UK adoptions along with some beautiful messages for adoptive parents too.
    I was also asked to write in the preface for the anthology;
    ‘The young people in this book will force you to see and feel into a land beyond your own. This is a read that must be read. This is a book that must be given. This is a time for things to be said. These are the young people who will shape our tomorrow"

  • Fostering explained with Harvey Gallagher
    ‘every child needs and deserves the best start in life we can give them. If there own family haven’t been able to give that to them then I think that it’s our responsibility as a county but more important as communities to offer that child our help and support’

    Today, Harvey is much renowned and respected for his lifetime of service to fostering, his wisdom and passion shines through this interview. He shares about the importance of the role of fostering in society, the challenges that are now being faced and there is great advice and encouragement if you are interested in starting your journey into fostering today.

About Adoption Arena Podcast

From the publisher's feed

Adoption Arena focuses on discussing the complex and ever changing issues that affect adoptees, foster families and those who are linked with the adoption and fostering world in some way. We are based in the UK but overseas adoptions mean that more understanding of multi-cultural families and ethnicity is often required for young people and families to really flourish. This programme is hosted by Joy Carter, who is herself a transracial adoptee from Nigeria to the UK arriving in London at the age of 2. ‪
