Черноризец Храбър

Черноризец Храбър e български писател и монах, живял през 9.- 10. в. Той спомага за разпространението на най-първия славянски литературен език - църковнославянския. По време на престоя му в Преславската книжовна школа той спомага и за развитието на средновековната българска литература. Прозвището, носено от него в школата, означава "Облеченият в черна риза Храбър ". Името "Черноризец" сочи към факта, че той заема най-нисшето стъпало в монашеската йерархия.

За Храбър няма много официални данни, така че се вярва дори, че името му може да е псевдоним на друг, много известен преподавател в школата. Някои историци даже считат, че името е използвано от цар Симеон I.

Chernorizets Hrabar

Chernorizets Hrabar was a Bulgarian writer and monk who lived during the 9th and 10th centuries. He helped to spread the very first Slavic literary language, which was Old Church Slavic. During his time at the Preslav Literary School, he also helped to develop literature during medieval times in Bulgaria. His appellation while at the school translates to "Hrabar, the Black Robe Wearer." "Chernorizets" is a reference to the fact that he held the lowest rank on the hierarchy of monks.

Not much official information is known about Hrabar, so it is believed that the name may even have been a pseudonym for another very well-known teacher at the school. Some historians even believe that the name was actually used for Tsar Simeon I.

History records that Hrabar, whoever he was, wrote only one piece of literature. An Account of Letters is considered to be one of the most important works in the Old Church Slavonic language. One of the reasons the work is so significant is the fact that it is the only medieval literary source that marks the precise year the Glagolitic alphabet was invented. The book actually defends the alphabet and argues in favor of its use over the Greek alphabet.

In addition to defending the Glagolitic alphabet, Hrabar also recorded some important details about how the Slavs wrote before Christianity came to their region. The references are believed to have been some type of runic script, although there are no surviving examples of this alphabet still around.
