Aleko Konstantinov
Aleko Konstantinov was the creator of Bay Ganyo, who is one of the most well-known characters in all of Bulgarian fiction. His father was an affluent trader, and he earned his law degree from the University of Odessa. He started out working within the judicial system in Bulgaria, serving as a judge and prosecutor at different times in his career.
Konstantinov's first book was Uncle Ganyo, and in it he introduced his well-known character Bay Ganyo. The collection of short stories tells about Ganyo's travels through America and Western Europe. He goes to the World Exhibitions in a number of cities around the world, including Chicago, Prague, and Paris. The book is especially important because it came shortly after the Bulgarian people had won their freedom from the oppression of the Ottoman Empire. Another important work by Konstantinov was To Chicago and Back, another story in which Bay Ganyo played a part, although he was more of a background character rather than the main focus of the story. The book is essentially notes from Konstantinov's trip to Chicago. The book had an enormous impact not just on Bulgarians, but also on Chicago. The city has the largest concentration of immigrants from Bulgaria in the U.S.
Konstantinov died in 1897 after a fatal gunshot wound. The shooting was likely an assassination attempt against his friend, who was a politician. The two men had just traded positions on the coach they were sharing before the shot was fired. A few people believed that his death was political in nature because his writings had infuriated governmental leaders, who supposedly wanted him dead.
