경상도 사투리로 왜냐고 물어보기
여러분 안녕하세요.
KoreanClass101.com

Asking "WHY" in Gyeongsangdo Korean.
Hello, everyone.
This is Hyomin from Koreanclass101.com.
From this blog, when we are asking for "what" ("meuot") and "why" ("wae"), we will see what kind of words Gyeongsangdo locals use!
First of all, we will start up with "why" ("wairano") and "what" ("munnil").
In standard Korean, when we ask about something, we use "Why is it like this?" ("wae irae") or "What's up?" ("wae geurae"). However, in the Gyeongsangdo dialect, it is either "Why is it like this?" ("waikano") or "Why is it like this?" ("wairano").
"Why is it like this?" ("waikano") is the combined word of "why" ("wai") and "is it like this?" ("ikano").
"Why" ("wa") is the Gyeongsangdo dialect version of "why" ("wae"). "Is it like this?" ("ikano") is "it like this" ("~ireuneunde") or "is it like this" ("irae"). As "why" ("wa") and "Is it like this?" ("ikano") combined, it means "Why is it like this?" ("wae ireuneunde").
Make sure you emphasize the third letter, "ka."
The word "what" ("meuot") actually includes the meaning of "what is" ("meon il"). Therefore, while we say "what is" ("museum il") in standard Korean, it gets shortened to "what is" ("meonil"), which means "what is up." On real occasions, it is a bit smoothly pronounced as "meunnil."
So, let's see what this example means. "Why? What's up?" ("wa? meonil itna?") What do you think it means?
It means, "Why? What's up?" ("wae? meuseunil itsseo?")
Okay, here's another one. "Why did you do that?" ("wa geuraetno?")
Can you guess it what it means? It means "Why did you do that?" ("neo waegeuratseo?"). In the Gyeongsangdo dialect, "you" ("neo") becomes "you" ("ni"), "Why did you do that?" ("wae geuraetsseo"), "Why did you do that?" ("wat geuretno?")
How about asking your friends today using the Gyeongsangdo dialect?
See you next time!
