Spring flowers had disappeared, and May has come with flourishing greeneries.
Have you ever heard what May is called in Korea?
Yes, that's correct. It is known as a "family month." So in May, there are numbers of anniversaries that are celebrated to remind us of the importance of family and encourage us to show appreciation to each family member.
If we consider the anniversaries by date, May 5, or Children's Day, is the first one to appear on the calendar. Children's day was established to "respect children's rights and to promote their happiness," and it was implemented in 1923.
The next is Parents' Day, on May 8, where people practice the virtue of "showing respect to seniors and filial piety to parents" by thanking their parents and honoring seniors.
This day was first named "Mother's day," but in 1973, it was enlarged and re-established as "Parents' Day," including fathers to be honored. Sons and daughters express their appreciation to their parents and grandparents with gifts and by putting carnations on them.
Also in May, there is "Family Day" on May 15 and "Couple's Day" on May 21 to emphasize the importance of family, family responsibilities, and the relationship between married couples.
In May, known as "Family Month," there are many events and policies designed to celebrate families in many different places.
However, there exists a problem that has been a hot topic in Korean Society lately, which is the low birth rate issue.
In 2017, the number of new born babies decreased by 50,000 compared to the year before, and the total fertility rate—the number of children who would be born per woman—was 1.05, which was the lowest record ever.
In order to maintain the current population, the total fertility rate has to mark at least 2.1, but the rate hit the lowest (rather than having any increase) in 2017, so the concern over the demographic cliff is being heightened.
The main causes for decreasing marriage and birth rates are known to be the population decline and employment crisis.
So, in turn, the government is implementing equal employment and support for work-family reconciliation and carrying out policies to solve employment, housing, birthing, and childcare problems and to extend government support on maternity and parenting.
