Melanie Weller is a Physical Therapist and Medical Visionary. Through her 20 plus years of practice from a medical model, and from personal experience, she realized that the body is trying to tell a story that is much bigger than what traditional medicine has taught us. Melanie’s current practice focuses on the vagus nerve as it encompasses more of the body system than most of us are aware. Mike was an aspiring NHL hockey player. Living his dream in the OHL, his debilitating injuries led him to 6 different surgeries in just two short years as a young adult male. While constantly being prescribed pain medication to numb the pain so he could “push through” the pain and focus on living his dream. Percocet was one of the main prescription drugs he relied upon, which was readily available, and drove him to an addiction. At his lowest point, he felt isolated, was deceptive and was overwhelmed with a tremendous loss of control. Though he was constantly in physical and emotional pain, he carried on but was alone in the pressure of making it to the NHL and living away from his parents.

In hindsight, he wishes he would have listened to his body and allowed it to take the proper time and care to heal. He realizes that this was a big life lesson and now serves as a role model for young kids who play hockey. He aims to help young boys avoid the “tough guy mentality” by talking about the struggles they have and to seek out those who will love and support them as it is virtually impossible to do alone. He says he doesn’t know if he would be alive today if he didn’t allow others to help him seek treatment.

Now 25 years old, Mike is a hockey scout and coach with a stable life and healthy mindset. He says, “hockey should be a game you love”; as soon as you stop having fun, that’s when you know you’re going down the wrong road. He offers guidance to his young players and discusses the resources that are available in the community for those who are struggling with addiction and mental health. He makes a point to stay after practice and keep an open door for them.

Speaker, Author, Podcaster, Mark Metry interviews successful people around the world and will be sharing his insight on an upcoming TEDTalk. His podcast is a “mental-health focused Global Top 100 Show for entrepreneurs”. He also has a book available called "Screw Being Shy" and on today's podcast episode, he gives a raw account of his experience with social anxiety, depression and suicide. Essentially, he has turned his traumatic experiences as an anxious youth into a story of empowerment. Mark wants to use his momentum to a higher level. He is currently working on a documentary with Amazon Prime called “The Social Movement,” which will air in the summer.
