Today we're replaying an episode I recorded about a month ago with someone very special to Terry and me, Bill Gray of Gray Ranches in Ordway, Colorado.
When I first came into the CCA world, I honestly thought Bill was the association. He was on the board when Terry was hired and remained in that position for nearly a decade afterward. One of the people who believed in Terry early and supported him throughout his time there.
Bill passed away on November 24th at the age of 74 and we wanted to honor him by sharing this conversation again.
He was a pillar in Crowley County, a lifelong cattleman, and a steady, generous presence in our industry. Our deepest sympathy and all our hugs go out to his wife, Debbie, and the whole Gray family. I like to imagine Terry, Tim Lehman, and David Mendenhall waiting for him as he steps into Heaven's Cattleman's Bar, welcoming their old friend with open arms.

My guest today is my friend Rachel Gabel, writer, ag advocate, and host of the Pro Ag podcast. She’s known for her work in The Fence Post, the Denver Gazette, and the Colorado Springs Gazette. Rachel knew Terry and leaned on him for his steady advice and wisdom.
In this episode, she opens up about her family’s own uncertainties around succession planning—a struggle that’s far more common in agriculture than we like to admit.

I’m joined again by Erin Spaur, Executive Vice President of the Colorado Cattlemen’s Association. She addresses previous guest issues. The rising cost of production — which often means ranchers need a second job — and the importance of understanding what the older generation wants. Additionally, consumer awareness, wolves, and the cattle market. Erin responds to President Trump’s recent suggestion to import beef from Argentina — a move that could undercut U.S. producers and create unnecessary risks.

Lisa's journey began in Western Kansas, where she grew up on a large farm. The hay business in Emporia faces unique climate challenges, impacting yield. Multi-generational ranching is a significant aspect of Lisa's family history. Gary's passing in 2014 forced Lisa and her sons to adapt quickly to running the business. The boys have taken on significant roles in the family business after their father's death. Succession planning is a work in progress for Lisa, focusing on protecting family land. Input costs and regulations are major challenges in the agriculture and trucking industries. Sustainability practices are crucial for maintaining the health of the land. Community support has been vital for the family after Gary's passing. Transparency in agriculture is important for building trust with consumers.
