Today we have a great story called Poison in the Soup. You can find the story in your Bible in  2 Kings 4:38-41.

The pot of stew bubbled and boiled until the room filled with a scrumptious scent. The prophets looked at each other and grinned–they could not wait to eat their feast.

"It's ready!" The cook called out as he hit a wooden spoon on the table to get everyone's attention.

As the prophets eagerly gathered around the pot, their stomachs growling with anticipation, one of them took a hesitant bite. "This stew tastes... strange," he remarked, furrowing his brow in confusion.

Another prophet, noticing the unusual taste, took a closer look at his bowl. "What did you put in this stew?" he asked, his voice tinged with concern.

But before anyone could answer, another prophet cried out in alarm, "That pot of stew is deadly!" They pushed their bowls away in fear, their faces pale with shock.

"Elisha, there's death in this pot!" another young man cried. His hands shaking.

Simplicity and Sincerity

Yesterday, we learned that Paul's love for the Corinthians was made manifest in that he comforted them in their hardships, just as he received comfort from God in his (2 Cor. 1:1-11). Today, we will see that his love for them was also displayed through the integrity that he and his fellow workers manifested toward the church members in Corinth.

Read 2 Corinthians 1:12-14 in the light of 2 Corinthians 2:17, and 2 Corinthians 4:2. How does Paul's sincerity reveal his love for the Corinthians?

Second Corinthians 1:12-14 introduces the thesis Paul will develop in the rest of the letter. His integrity and apostleship have been questioned by some in Corinth. They thought Paul had a vacillating and indecisive character, which was not fitting for the apostolic ministry. In response, Paul stresses that he and his colleagues behaved with the utmost integrity toward them.

Two words portray the conduct of Paul and his associates: simplicity and sincerity (2 Cor. 1:12). The term "simplicity" comes from the Greek word haplotēs. It is applied here to express personal integrity in speech or behavior; in short, it reveals the purity of motives (Eph. 6:5, Col. 3:22). In turn, the term "sincerity" (from the Greek eilikrineia) also points to integrity and purity of motives.

The Corinthians should not have doubted the clarity of Paul's intentions. He makes it clear that his simplicity and sincerity have their origin in God. This idea is well captured by the New English Translation Bible, which mentions "pure motives and sincerity which are from God" (2 Cor. 1:12, emphasis supplied). In the same verse, Paul further asserts that these ministerial qualities are given to us "by the grace of God."

It seems Paul's opponents misinterpreted his words, in previous written communications (2 Cor. 1:13-14). Paul guarantees that his intentions were clear and understandable. He was sure that the uprightness of his words, intentions, and actions would be made clear "in the day of the Lord Jesus" (2 Cor. 1:14, NKJV).

Pastor Brinton Laing reflects on the painful words people can hear in life, but draws attention to the most serious words found in Matthew 7:23: “I never knew you.” The sermon emphasizes that these words are directed not at openly irreligious people, but at those who appear deeply religious and have even performed works in Christ’s name. The central warning is that knowing about Jesus is not the same as having an intimate relationship with Him. The Greek concept of “knowing” points to a deep, personal relationship rather than mere intellectual knowledge.

The sermon connects this warning with the parable of the ten virgins, emphasizing that preparation for Christ’s return must involve more than outward religious activity. We can attend church, serve, wear uniforms, participate in ministries, and appear spiritually prepared while still lacking a genuine relationship with Christ. Pastor Laing challenges the congregation to examine whether Christ truly knows them and whether their daily devotional life, family life, and spiritual foundation are rooted in Him.

Using the illustration of the two houses built on rock and sand, the message concludes that outward appearance is not what matters when the storms come. What matters is the foundation. The appeal is therefore to pursue both preparation for Christ’s return and a personal relationship with Christ, building our lives on Jesus—the solid Rock—so that when the winds and waves come, our faith will stand.

The sermon closes with a call to recommit ourselves to Christ and ensure that when He returns, we will hear the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant,” rather than “I never knew you.”
