Easter Island (or Rapa Nui) is a tiny, 63 square mile island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is part of Chile but located over 2,300 miles from Sanitago and is considered one of the most remote inhabited islands in the world. It is also known for Moai, the large stone statues all over the island carved hundreds of years ago. When we left for South America we had no intention of going to this island, however, another volunteer we met in Bolivia convinced us it was worth trying to go (it didn't take much convincing). Long story short, we found a workaway on the island and inexpensive plane tickets and booked the trip. We spent the month of April 2019 on Easter Island. It was an amazing island to explore, we tell you all about it in this episode!

In 2007, Kris and I drove a campvervan twice in Australia for one week at a time and fell in love with that type of travel. We always dreamed of doing a longer trip and decided to make it happen in Patagonia. From February 25 to April 2, 2019, we drove a campvervan from Punta Arenas to Santiago, Chile. We explored southern Argentinian Patagonia, spent a lot of our time driving the Carretera Austral through Chilean Patagonia, then crossed back into Argentina further north before crossing again back to Chile near Santiago. We covered almost 4,000 miles in 5 weeks. This episode is a compilation of excerpts we recorded during the second half of our van trip (go listen to Episode 16 for the first part). It was an epic adventure so listen now!

We covered almost 4,000 miles in 5 weeks. This episode is a compilation of excerpts we recorded during the first half of our van trip. We even had some of our good friends, Mitch and Allie, join us for the first week. It was an epic adventure so listen now!

From a failed workaway, to water issues at two different Airbnbs (one with too much water, one with too little water), and other fun experiences, the month did not turn out like we anticipated. From November 2018 to January 2019 we lived near Puerto Octay, Chile, volunteering at a farm and restaurant called Espantapajaros (scarecrow in Spanish). We had a wonderful time getting to know the owners of the farm and other volunteers, helping out on the farm (hint: it was mostly yard work!), and having a few local adventures. This episode recaps our experiences including eating delicious food at the buffet, a 4-day backpacking adventure, and watching a dog eat a chicken! Go Listen!

For this interview, we sit down with Suzanne in her home in Buena Vista, Bolivia. She is originally from the U.S. and her husband, Papacho, is from Bolivia. They met in Bolivia, moved to the states for 9 years, and then moved back to Bolivia. Both are dedicated to environmental conservation and to cultivating an appreciation of the natural world in others. They are avid birders and we even got to go on a International Big Day with them! We chat about the transitions from Bolivia to the US and back, education for their children, Nala and Rio, and tourism and conservation in Bolivia's National Parks. And we challenge Suzanne to name all of Papacho's 14 siblings at the end of the interview! Go listen now!
