  • Adventure Party #33 – The Spirit of Non-Competition
With the holidays rapidly approaching, we take an opportunity to discuss our favorite games that involve the spirit of non-competition. Why a theme of non-competition? The holidays are rapidly approaching and in keeping with the theme of peace, we wanted to offer some gaming alternatives to a game goal of winning.
These are mostly board games, with one exception and they could make some great holiday gifts for your favorite gamer. The games we discuss are Tales of the Arabian Nights, The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Pandemic, and Samurai Spirit.
    Glenn’s Review:
Glenn reviews the board game called Mission Red Planet. It has a steam punk feel and it involves mining resources from Mars to deal with the explosive growth of mankind on planet Earth. You and your fellow mining company owners are in a race to get the most ore, ice, and other minerals to make yourself rich... and help humanity. This, up to six player game, is fun to play and not to time consuming. You can find out more about Mission Red Planet at the Board Game Geek website.

Yep, You Can Play Dungeons & Dragons in VR Now

VR Dungeons & Dragons is now a reality thanks to a company called AltSpaceVR. You can now use your OcculusRift or other VR gear to play D&D, in a virtual world, with your friends. You'll have your own avatar and a virtual game mat to show the other players a game map for your D&D characters. It sounds a little meta but looks like it could be a lot of fun. If you're not into Roll20 or other service, this might be a cool way for you to play your favorite RPG.

    Kickstarter Spotlight:
    Roll Player
Thunderworks Games has an interesting game they are Kickstarting. It's a game about making an RPG character. Talk about meta, this dice game is all about making a true hero of the lands by rolling dice and choosing skills and traits that will make you the most amazing Wizard/Sorcerer, Druid/Ranger, Warrior/Barbarian, Cleric/Bard, Thief/Rogue, Monk/Bard you can possibly be.

    Glenn’s Review:
Glenn reviews the game Galaxy Trucker. It's a tile game that makes you work against a timer to create your ship and then work to pick up and haul goods while avoiding asteroids that can whittle down your spacecraft. The first back, with the most hauled to the destination, wins. It's a simple, fast paced game that make you plan and build the best craft you can with the items that are available to you.

  • Adventure Party #30 – What Lies Ahead for White Wolf?
In this meeting, we focus on a big story that broke. Paradox Interactive bought White Wolf Publishing from CCP Games. What does this mean for companies like Onyx Path Publishing and By Night Studios, who have been and are currently working on products for the brand? We'll give you the history of White Wolf and their importance to the history of the tabletop gaming boom of the 90s. While there aren't a whole lot of answers at this time, we have some ideas of where this may go.
    Glenn's Review:
Malifaux is a tabletop minis game that is fast paced. It's a game with free rules available online, which makes it somewhat unique. Where is shines is it's not as expensive to get into, like Warhammer 40k. You can assemble and paint your armies and pit them angainst other players. A typical game takes about 90 minutes, which is well under most miniature games. If you are into strategic gaming, this may be for you.

    Kickstarter Spotlight:
A classic Cheapass board game is reborn into a deluxe edition! Kill Doctor Lucky is the first game tha tthey put out, in 1996. It launched the name Cheapass Games and made gaming affordable and interesting. As a small press company, they accomplished a lot and continue to do so. Now they are looking to release a brand new delux format of the game. It's a strategy game that is almost like a prequel to Clue. Up to 8 players will have the opportunity to kill Doctor Lucky. All you need to do is get him alone in a room and commit the deadly deed while no one is watching. An average game takes up to 45 minutes and it is well worth it.

  • Adventure Party #29 – Going With the Flow
In this meeting, we talk about some of the games that we are excited to see in 4th quarter 2015 and 2016. We aren't limiting it to and game type. Board, card, tabletop RPG, console, and computer games are all on the table. Our games were Fallout 4, Ghostbusters: The Boardgame, SAVE - The Eternal Society, Blood Rage, Arkham Investigator, and Mistfall. We discuss another Todd Roll related tale and give major kudos to the talented Mark Wooldrage, of Central Battery Musicworks, who composed the theme for Adventure Party.
    Glenn's Review:
Glenn introduces us to The Grizzled. A card game that puts you in the trenches of World War I. IT's a 2-5 player game that takes around 30 minutes to play. You need to use strategy and teamwork to survive the mission. Your team leader will instruct each team member on how many cards to draw. You'll use those cards and your special abilities to finish out the mission and survive the war.

  • Adventure Party #28 – Fallout, Mediums, and Other Things
In this Meeting, we discuss our favorite Horror Themed board games. On our lists are Betrayal at House on the Hill, Eldritch Horror, A Touch of Evil, Last Night on Earth: Growing Hunger, Fury of Dracula, Renfield, Student Bodies, and Ghost Stories. We give you reasons that you'll want to check these out and add them to your game collection. We also get 3 Hello My Name Is... submissions and we choose our winner of the drawing by Rollin Kunz.
    Glenn's Review:
Keeping with our horror theme, Glenn reviews a board game called Mysterium. This game lets you experience Spiritualism in the 1920s. One player assumes the role of a spirit that inhabits a home in Scotland. The other players are mediums who must determine how the deceased met their end. Each round, the spirit player hands out cards to the mediums. The cards are then used to help figure out who the killer is. Those that guess correctly move on to the next round and guess the location and then the weapon. I equate it to Clue in reverse.

It's a game that plays up to 7 players and takes about 45 minutes.

    Glenn's Review:
Glenn reviews Sentinel Tactics: The Flame of Freedom from Greater Than Games. It's a beautifully designed miniatures game that lets you be the hero or villain you've always wanted to be. Using a hex map, you battle in the streets with 2-6 players in this team-based game. They've also released a number of expansions that really increase the replay-ability of this game. We've loved what they did with Sentinels of the Multiverse card game and this game does not disappoint.

    Kickstarter Spotlight:
We introduce you to Folklore: The Affliction. This is a dark fantasy board game with elaborate and beautiful miniatures. You and the rest of the players must team up to defeat the evil of the land. Unfortunately, these creatures are only a symptom. You must investigate and find the source of the disease that plagues the land and bring back all that is good. The stretch goals available in this Kickstarter are staggering but what you get is a bargain based on the costs of other gaming miniatures. You'd also be able to use these in any tabletop campaign you may play as well.

  • Adventure Party #26 – Movies That Could Be RPGs
In this meeting, we discuss movies that seemed like they came from gaming sessions. Regardless of the genre, there are some movies that look and feel like the came from a D&D, Cyberpunk 2020, Dark Conspiracy or Champions session. We pick our movies that give us that feel, why we think that, and possible systems those movies could have come from.
    Glenn's Review:
Glenn reviewed Luchador! Mexican Wrestling dice game, more specifically the second edition that comes with the 3D dice ring. We both marveled at the game mechanics and the stories of each of the characters that you can play. You can hit, pin, and counter your opponents dice. You can even knock the dice out of the ring to eliminate some of there rolls against you. It's a 2-4 player game that has an average play time of 15 minutes.

Glenn reviews the game Prohis from Blue Orange Games. It's a 3-6 player game about smuggling during the Prohibition. You're not just smuggling alcohol but other illegal goods as well. Your primary focus is building your empire while keeping the cops out of your business. Make sure you get them out of your hand and into play. Any goods left in your hand will count against you.
