Holmes admires Adler's intelligence and integrity, deciding to let her keep the photograph to protect her privacy and reputation.The case concludes with Adler's departure, having earned Holmes' respect for her wit and cleverness, as well as leaving the King of Bohemia grateful for Holmes' efforts, despite the unsuccessful retrieval of the photograph. It's a story where Holmes is bested by the intellect and charm of a worthy opponent, Irene Adler.
