In this edition of the Affiliate Buzz audio newsletter James Martell, successful publisher, speaker and author talks with wife and cohost Arlene Martell as they recap this year's Affiliate Summit West in Las Vegas.
Having attended these conferences for many years James and Arlene are a top resource in understanding what to expect, how to get the most out of your attendance and making sure it's worth your time and effort. Again this year they brought home valuable nuggets to share and tips on getting ready for next year!
With each conference having their own layout and varying twists they share that there's really no better way to kick off a conference than with the meat market. A meat market is literally a line of merchants set up in a "flea market" style with all the perks of their company on display. Each table has a representative ready to answer your questions, show you the inside of their company and of course offer to link up online.
If there is one thing Share-A-Sale is known for at these events it's their get acquainted kick off party. This year the Sunday night part was hosted 50 feet above the strip with a crystal clear dance floor that had unsurpassed views and full of excitement. Every year the kick off parties take affiliates and merchants by surprise and can easily be what you look forward to.
This year it wasn't only the Share-A-Sale party that deserved attention. Buy.at hosted their own party on Monday night where everyone had a chance to meet the team get acquainted with their company. With the perfect networking ambiance James shares this was one party everyone would want to attend.
Organizing Your Work Load for Efficiency and Success
But we don't attend Summit just for the parties, all though they are certainly worth attending. Rather we go to learn about everything new in the affiliate industry, meet potential merchants and improve your own business. James and Arlene discuss some of the sessions that were held this year and give a closer look at what the meat market has to offer.
As James discusses the day to day schedule of sessions and topics that were covered he and Arlene touch on the common complaint of information overload. With so much valuable information being laid on the table many attendees find themselves swallowed up by what is presented to them. The good news is information overload CAN be avoided.
Arlene shares practical tips for both the first time attendee and those who have been to events in the past. By scheduling your days and sessions intentionally you can focus your efforts in areas that will benefit your business above all else. She even shares how to manage the emotional crash that frequently follows your return home.

  • Affiliate Buzz #227 – Google’s Panda Update – How to Regain Your Ground – Pt 2
In this edition of the Affiliate Buzz audio newsletter James Martell, successful publisher, speaker and author talks with wife and co-host Arlene Martell continue their discussion on the Google Panda 2.5 update and take a deeper look on what it means to for your site.
As more questions flood the help desk James and Arlene continued their investigation to better understand the impact this newest algorithm change was having on the common webmaster. And so continues their discussions as they share 5 tips you can take to repair any damage you may have sustained or are trying to avoid.
    Staying Ahead of Algorithm Updates
To begin they took a long hard look at the type of content published on the sites that were being hit the hardest. It wasn't long before they recognized one drastic similarity, low quality. It's no shock that Google is only interested in quality. Rather recognizing what that quality is can prove challenging.
The next thing they noticed across the board was failure to engage in appropriate social media tools. While these only add up to one out of 200 factors Google does like to see a site that is popular enough to be shared around.
Next on the list that stood out real clear was the use of anchor text coming into their sites. James admits that he is one who was penalized for duplicate anchor text on the next. But duplication isn't the only key ingredient, the quality of the phrase as well as the site it is placed on play significant roles.
Correcting Your Site to Climb Again
If you're traffic has dropped and you've done your homework to know for sure it's the new update don't panic. There are simple and practical steps you can take. The first step is to assess your content and make sure you have a backup before making any changes.
Collect a list of all your backlinks coming into your site and write them all down. Your goal of course is to check the quality of the sites and the links that are coming in. And of course don't neglect your social media efforts both on your site and off.
Listen to this edition of the Affiliate Buzz as James and Arlene talk about:

    * Google's Panda 2.5 update on more detail
    * The role of your content
    * Off page factors that are in your control

If you've been affected by this most recent update simply take a breath and prepare to pull your sleeves up. And to help you evaluate your content and anchor text consider listening to Affiliate Buzz #168 Quality Content Defined followed closely behind with Affiliate Buzz #167 Quality Backlinks Defined as you work your way back up the Google ladder.

  • Affiliate Buzz #226 – Google’s Panda Update – How to Regain Your Ground – Pt 1
In this edition of the Affiliate Buzz audio newsletter James Martell, successful publisher, speaker and author talks with wife and co-host Arlene Martell about yet another Google update, the Panda 2.5.

But don't rush off and start checking your site rankings to see if you've been affected. At least not yet.
With every algorithm change there is the dreaded fluctuation in rankings and ultimately in your traffic. What follows then seems to be a rather predictable scenario, panic. Webmasters across the globe rush to their statistics and the moment they see any change you can find them in the forums blaming Google for ruining their business. But what if there was more to it than that?
*Subscribe to the Affiliate Buzz by email, RSS feed or via iTunes.
The truth is there are many factors that could result in a drop to your search rankings that may be relatively simple to correct. For example James shares an email from a concerned webmaster whose primary site had dropped in rankings on his main income pages and how it had occurred soon after Google's update. After a taking the time to stop and think they were able to identify the true cause for his lost traffic and a simple solution to getting it back.
But What About Social Media? I Bet That's Why I Was Bumped.
Soon to follow panic is the guessing game, "I lost my rankings because my articles are too long" or "I know it's because I don't utilize enough social media around my site." While factors such as these may be considered when Google determines how to rank your pages it is such an insignificant indicator that it's highly unlikely to negatively impact the results.
To support this position James uses sites that are owned by members to his SUPER BootCamp and the statistics of their search engine rankings. He discloses that although none of these sites utilize social media their top rankings remain untouched by this newest update.
So How Do You Protect Your Rankings Properly?
Knowing that Google is the only one who can truly answer this question there has been one approach that seems to stand the test of time, and algorithm updates, properly executed article distribution known as the PAD Technique.
In this technique high quality articles are offered to other webmasters to publish on their sites with carefully selected anchor text included. But throwing out articles with anchor text intact isn't all this technique is about. It demands attention to detail, understanding the importance of appropriately using keywords and a commitment to other websites.
Though it appears demanding to say the least James discloses that through each algorithm update students who have diligently followed the PAD Technique appropriately continue to enjoy to top spots in Google.
Listen to this edition of the Affiliate Buzz as James and Arlene talk about:

    * Google's Panda 2.5 update
    * What not to do if you've been effected
    * How to appropriately protect your site rankings

Why cross your fingers and hope you make through when there is a safe, practical way to keep your sites rankings without all the fuss.
