  • UK Minister Says No-Trade Deal Brexit Is Still Possible
    A senior British minister said there was still a chance of a turbulent Brexit without a trade deal as talks with the European Union had snagged on fishing, governance rules and dispute resolution.
    A French official said Britain must clarify its positions and really negotiate and cautioned that the EU would not accept a substandard deal.
    Both Britain and the EU say they want a deal, and their two negotiating teams have been locked in intensive talks for more than five weeks though they are still at odds over the three most contentious issues.

  • Mozambique Legislators Ask For Increase In HIV Budget
    Legislators in Mozambique's parliament are urging the government to allocate more funds to tackle the HIV/Aids epidemic, in the week that marks World Aids day.
    The budget allocated to combat the epidemic has been reducing year after year - the budget has decreased from $2.9m (£2.1m) in 2015 to about $1.6m in 2020.

    President Uhuru Kenyatta said Kenya is now looking to the east for a potential Covid-19 vaccine.
    The president gave the ministry of health the go ahead to shop for vaccines from China.
    The country's decision comes in the wake of rich countries in the west buying nearly 3.8 billion doses of vaccines currently in development.

  • Seychelles Calls On Mauritius Investors
    Seychelles' newly elected President Wavel Ramkalawan on a three-day visit to Mauritius appealed to investors to come and finance businesses in his country.
    Mr Ramkalawan on Tuesday announced that his country will improve the business climate with new initiatives to improve its placing in the Ease of Doing Business Index.The goal is to reach the Top 10 by 2021.
    He invited Mauritian businesses to establish themselves in sectors such as fishing, agriculture and health.

  • Nigerian Government Okays N1.8bn Loan Applications For Artisanal Miners
    The federal government said it received 138 loan applications, totalling N14.59 billion, and has approved 13, covering N1.08 billion, under the Artisanal and Small-scale Miners (ASM) Financing Support Fund.
    The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Mr. Olamilekan Adegbite, on Tuesday in Abuja, that the fund was established in 2017 by the ministry in collaboration with the Bank of Industry.

  • Central Bank of Nigeria Releases Banks’ Excess CRR to Spur Economic Recovery
    The Central Bank of Nigeria has approved the release of banks’ excess cash reserve requirement which is above the regulatory minimum.
    It stated that it would be done through its issuance of 90-day CBN Special Bills.
    The CBN stated this in a letter addressed to all banks, dated December 1, 2020, signed by its Director, Banking Supervision, Mr. Bello Hassan.
    At last month’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting, the CRR was retained at 27.5 per cent.

    The Lagos State Judicial Panel on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses has dismissed a petition seeking to enforce a N300 million court judgment against the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
    Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Federal High Court had awarded the sum as compensation against the police for the death of one Jimoh Kehinde in 2018.

    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has confirmed 281 new cases of coronavirus in the country. This brings the total number of COVID-19 infections recorded in the country so far to 67,838.
    The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control in a tweet showed that the 281 new cases are reported from 13 states.
