  • Buhari Stops Estimated Billings As He Directs Mass Metering Of Electricity Consumers
    Operators in Nigeria's power sector have been ordered to carry out mass metering of unmetered electricity customers nationwide. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, on Wednesday, said the order was given by President Muhammadu Buhari.
    In a tweet, NERC also declared that it had not approved any increase in electricity tariffs, as reported in some quarters on Wednesday.

  • South Africa ministry OKs AngloGold Asset Sale But Blocks De-listing
    South Africa’s mines ministry has given the green light for the sale of AngloGold Ashanti’s last remaining assets in the country to Harmony Gold on condition that it does not delist from the Johannesburg stock Exchange. In an email, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy said an application in terms of Section 11 of the MPRDA has been received and was approved on 24 July.

    The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, disclosed these to State House correspondents at the end of a meeting of the council presided over by the President, Muhammadu Buhari.

  • Presidency Reacts As Nigeria’s GDP Shrinks By -6.10% in Q2
    The Nigerian Presidency, on Wednesday, commended the recently released GDP results for the second quarter of 2020 released by the National Bureau of Statistics despite a 6.10% decline year-on-year. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, stated its position on the GDP figures in a statement titled “Our response to Quarter 2, 2020 NBS figures, by Presidency.” In the statement, Mr. Adesina stated that the overall decline of 6.1 per cent (for Q2 2020) and -2.18 per cent, for H1 2020, was better than the projected forecast of -7.24 per cent as estimated by the NBS.

  • Oil Prices Rally Higher, As U.S Oil Producers Suspend Operations In Gulf Of Mexico
    Crude oil prices rallied higher on Wednesday at Asia’s trading session. This was triggered by American oil producers shutting down most of their oil production in the Gulf of Mexico ahead of a pending hurricane storm and high hopes on China-U.S. trade talks.
    Brent crude futures gained, trading at $45.94 per barrel as at 0515GMT. West Texas Intermediate crude was also up 0.03%, trading at $43.37 per barrel. Both crude oil benchmarks settled at a five-month high yesterday.
