This mix highlights the major musical influence of the Garinagu (Plural for Garifuna ) peoples of costal Central America and their fight to keep their lands and culture intact. You wll hear traditional Punta and Parranda along with Belizean, Guatemalan, and Honduran bands cover Garifuna songs and include garifuna musicians in their ensembles, as well Garifuna musicians experimenting with reggae, soca, and kompa sounds.

Right now, foreign "investors" are killing Garifuna leaders, occupying harvested land, and cutting off communication infrastructure in order to profit off the strategic business and agricultural locations on the caribbean coast. In one incident, Radio Communitaria Faluma Bimetu (Coco Dulce), the first garifuna radio station was burned down to stop organizing efforts in the Garinagu villages under threat in Honduras.

This mix showcases the arrival of traditional mozambican music to national Radio Mozambique (formerly Radio Clude de Mozambique) after being banned by Portuguese colonizers since its inception. You'll hear radio drops, excerpts from president Samora Machel's free and independent Frelimo controlled Mozambique, as well as 1970s to 1990s acoustic/digital mbira (xylophone) and marrabenta on cassette tape, vinyl, and reel format.

History of the Garifuna: From 1500s to the 1700s, Shipwrecked africans mixed with indigenous Arawaks / Caribs ( Kalingo ) on the islands of Yurumei (Saint Vincent) and Dominica to create a hybrid race of people called the Garinagu (Plural for Garifuna )

Around the late 1700s, after more than 20 plus years of battling with French and British colonizers for land on the islands, the Garinagu were exiled to the island of Baliceaux then to the island Roatan off the coast of Honduras by the British at the end of intercolonial "Seven Years" War and First / Second Carib Wars.

Given the harsh conditions on the isle of Roatan, the Garinagu migrated to the caribbean coast of Central America namely Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, Nicaragua with their african and indigenous musical heritage, customs, and culture still intact.

The main two genres of Garinagu music from the 40s -70s were Punta and guitar based Parranda unitl the punta was electrified and combined with calypso and soca elements to create a new sound Punta Rock.

In the late 70s and early 80s, the Garinagu migrated further north to the USA and settled in states like New York, Florida, New Orleans, Texas, and California.

In the early 80s. the first bands in the USA started local "tropical" parties catering to a wide audience of people all backgrounds. They played their afro based punta, parranda, and punta rock while adding salsa, merengue, calypso, kompa, soca, reggae, dub songs to their repetoire.
