Our story for this episode concerns the ghoulie that freaks me out the most: dolls. I don’t care which dolls are haunted and which are not. I know the truth, they ALL are. Period. In our story, “Beatrice,” by Anika Mrose Rossi, a little girl receives a doll that is her perfect likeness. A little too perfect, unfortunately. 

Why the fascination with creepy dolls? I came across an article on the Hub.stalantic.com website. It holds some valuable insights into the answer to that question.

Our story for this episode takes us down a long, dark tunnel. In “Deep, Deep Tunnel,” by Scott Dyson, police and sewer workers must investigate a strange tunnel. What they find there is more gruesome and deadly than any alligator. Tunnels are famous for legends about dark-dwelling creatures. Let’s look at some true encounters with deep, dark creatures.

In our story, “The Living Nightmare,” by Anton M. Oliver, a man is asked to stay alone in a house to sit with dead man until the body is taken for burial. Unfortunately, the man experiences that the dead do not always rest in peace.

Many cultures and religions require that a dead body not be left alone at anytime.
 The tradition of "sitting with the dead" served practical, spiritual, and communal purposes before modern funeral homes and embalming existed. We'll explore a few examples.

In our story, “Forbidden Cupboard,” by Francis Garfield, a young woman instructed not to open a certain closet in her new apartment. She does, of course, and unleashes something rather unsavory. The word closet has many meanings, but most describe a closed or secret space. I could not find any stories of actual haunted closets, but in searching I came across this little gem:

Mary King’s Close in Edinburgh, Scotland, is often cited as one of the most haunted places on Earth — and it’s a closet in the truest sense. We'll take a look.

In our story, “Brotherhood in the Bone House,” By Cassandra O’Sullivan Sachar, some rowdy Frat Brothers find out the hard way, not to disrespect the dead. The boys want a strange souvenir to take back to their frat house to help in their secret rituals. This reminded me of the Skull and Bone Society, a secret group that makes its home (or tomb) at Yale University. The exclusive society is an old one, and its practices are shrouded in mystery and rumors of occult practices. We'll look at this “openly secret” group.

If you have ever visited someone in a nursing facility or rehab center, you know you don’t have to look far to see staff members happily helping the patients. The nurses, therapists and staff of these medical facilities are truly heroes in my book. In our story, “I Work at a Nursing Home for Monsters,” by Blair Daniels, a nurse discovers that the patients in the rest home are far from normal. Even worse, some are downright deadly. This story is a work of fiction, but there are many true accounts of staff experiencing the paranormal in these care facilities. We have a few.
