Cape Town's mayoral candidate, Geordin Hill Lewis, joins John to engage in the social discussion that was sparked when DA leader John Steenhuisen said that he has tasked the City of Cape Town to release golf courses for the development of housing. He will elaborate on the strategic context. 

He contextualized the task by explaining that the rapid rate of urbanization is not only restricted to Cape Town, but to the rest of the continent as well. 

The mayoral committee member for human settlements, Malusi Booi, said as part of the City's approved human settlements strategy, all suitable municipal land would be assessed.

The Director of The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, David Bellairs, will discuss the challenges leading up to and the ultimate victory of bringing the tour back to post Covid Cape Town.  The 43-year tradition of the world’s largest individually timed cycle race took place over the weekend. It has been celebrated as a safely managed resumption of major sporting events.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour kicked off on Sunday morning, with around 18 000 participants.

Dr. Els Vermeulen is the Unit Research Manager of The Mammal Research Institute’s Whale Unit at the University of Pretoria. She will join John to discuss the enlightening results of the annual aerial survey of southern right whales on 1 October. 

The 42nd annual southern right whale photo-identification aerial survey makes it one of the longest uninterrupted datasets on any marine mammal worldwide. 

The data was collected to investigate the vital parameters of the population, including abundance estimation, population growth rate, survival, calving intervals and age of first parturition (when a female has her first calf.

In the Lesseyton village in Komani in the Eastern Cape, the Enoch Mgijima municipality built a shoddy ‘stadium’ for R15-million. In a location that needs a great deal of municipal support and lacks all necessary services. 

The Lesseyton Stadium was built opposite the community hall for R15-million. The stadium has no electricity or running water, a rough turf, broken goalposts and a half completed affair which resembles nothing close to an athletics track. 

Daily Maverick Journalist Tembile Sgqolanathe will elaborate on the Stadium discussion that has caused a great deal of anger from residents and a great deal of recent social media attention in the lead up to the municipal elections.
