The Friends of the Kootenay Lake Stewardship society are hosting a fun, free event this Saturday, April 11, at Lakeside Park in Nelson. Program coordinator Raine Freeman joins Andrea to talk about the event as well as the work the society does that you could support!

Well well well, here’s a rabbit hole to go down! Think about the variety of life on earth today, and continuing to be discovered more every day. But how about the life before that, before the dinosaurs, before any of the 5 great extinctions? We have a limited amount of fossil proof… so limited in fact, that we know of only an estimated 1% of life that has existed on our planet. The rest? Completely up to our wildest imagination.

Remember the Great Depression, when all of the crops failed? Yeah, that sucked. But what are farmers in Canada doing differently? We’ve had a 5 year straight period of conditions considered a drought. Well, perhaps a mix of new tech and old traditions is helping Canadian farmers fare better than ever before.

We know pollution is bad for us, but just how bad is it? I’m sure glad to live in the Kootenays and breathe in the fresh air of Canada, that’s for sure!

Who’s it gonna be? Some names new, some old, but all extraordinary.

Today, we celebrate the genius of Franz Schubert and discuss his life story. Despite his life being cut short by succumbing to an illness at age 31, he had many intense years as a composer and musician. As tragic and lonely as his life sounds, music was his true love that kept him company with a passion that only grew until his last day. The beauty and rawness of his music moves people to this day, rarely forgotten and always admired. Happy birthday Schubert!
