We live in a world that celebrates freedom from the expectations of others. Yet this is also a world that heavily imposes its expectations on us. And so we find a “fear of man” lurking in our most unexpected thoughts:

”I don’t want to let others down.” “I don’t want to be a burden to anyone.” “I’m a perfectionist - I don’t want to reveal my flaws!” How do we overcome this fear of man?

Ps Johanan answers this question with the final instalment of the Saul series: “Tears for a Coward” from 1 Samuel 15.

”Whatever works.”

For many of us (especially here in Singapore), these two words represent the way we live. At its best, it encourages a bold decisiveness. At its worst, it leads us away from God as the ultimate authority.

Is there anything wrong with being practical? When does ‘being practical’ go to far? How does such practically keep us from true courage?

Christian belief involves taking a leap of faith - but it’s not a blind leap of faith. Such faith is undergirded by reasons and signs.

Yet sometimes we go to the other extreme. We try to remove any leap of faith whatsoever from Christian faith. Here we confuse faith with airtight reasoning and irrefutable signs.

How do we hold that tension? How does Christian belief lead to courage - not recklessness nor an aversion for risk?

Ps Johanan brings ”No Sign of Saul” from 1 Samuel 10.

Sometimes courageous and cowardly actions are identical. For example, deciding not to retaliate in a fight can be both a cowardly and a courageous course of action.

Oftentimes we cannot simply categorise certain actions as ‘cowardly’ or ‘courageous’. To distinguish between the two, we must go deeper: What feeds courage? What feeds cowardice?
