  • EM&B #178: Naturally Healed from Dis-ease
    David Gaynor tells a gripping story of how he was Naturally Healed from Dis-ease through probiotics, enzymes, raw food, faith and a positive mind set. You may have first heard about David when I mentioned him on the Revitalize Conference show when I talked about incredible his story is. Well it’s been awhile but we finally got together and set up an appointment to have David on the show from his own perspective.

    I’m only going to give you brief notes because what I write couldn’t compare to the way David tells his own story:
    Show Notes:

    * David is the nephew of Lou Corona, who is and has been incredibly influential in the raw food movement. David decided to take his own path and not follow his family’s beliefs.
    * David wanted to take his own path in life, enlisted in the army and was later sent to Iraq.
    * After a year at war David battled a much different war with drugs, alcohol and food like substances (all in which he calls self medication) when get got home.
    * Eventually David was diagnosed with Testicular Cancer.
    * After advice from his wife, uncle and family, David went against the council of conventional medicine and decided to take a more natural path.
    * David talks about how he used his family support, probiotics, enzymes, religion and raw food to eventually beat his tumor.

    As I said up top, these show notes don’t come close to explaining the struggle David went through, how he was able to fight back and make lifestyle changes for not only himself but his family.
    This story represents everything I believe about food. I believe food heals, food cures and food prevents and if we start changing our lifestyle around food we can find what true health really is.
    And just a quick note to thank David for taking some time to join us on Exploring Mind and Body. He’s busy with the family company (Puradyme) helping improve lives in a sustainable manner. I actually had the pleasure of meeting a few of David’s family members at the Revitalize Conference and to be quite honest with you, I’m not sure if you’ll find a more welcoming group of people.
    I wish you all the best David, your family and Puradyme, and I’ll look forward to working with you in the future.

  • Expectations
    I like to market, I really do. You don’t hear many people say that because of how difficult it is. Often there isn’t a tangible, often one day one thing works and the next it doesn’t. It’s hard to read people and it’s hard to figure out what people will respond to. I think it’s the challenge I like more than anything.
    So there’s a lot of talking going around about this ‘pay what you can stress detox’. The truth is, it’s more of an experiment than anything. I feel at least partially some people think it’s a ploy or a marketing scheme with a hidden agenda.
    I certainly understand expectation; I mean we all have expectations at least to an extent. When I send a thank you card or small gift (I’ve written on more than one occasion) I expect a response, which doesn’t mean I’m right, in fact it’s more beneficial in life not to have expectations. Given that I understand expectations it doesn’t mean I never have any but it also doesn’t mean I always have them.
    In this case I don’t to be honest with you. I don’t have a lot of products, in fact ‘selling’ really isn’t my thing. What I do is offer information, and let that person decide on their own which I know at times is counterproductive. More times than not people want to be told what to do.
    Case in point, ‘pay what you can’. So many people don’t know what to pay, in fact many people have asked me. And the truth is I don’t have an answer. I don’t have an expectation. Because I don’t sell often, because at times I even avoid it, I really have absolutely no expectation as to price or even how many people will register.
    I’ve written in a past post, I’d quite honestly do this detox for free. I like it that much, I feel a close connection with those involved because we’re talking every single day. The issue is, I don’t believe in ‘free’ for many things.
    First of all there’s an imbalance in a relationship, one is giving, one is taking and one is left hanging. Another factor is, when free is offered on occasion free is often expected, which means if you’re trying to run a business, you’ll find it awfully difficult if you’re only attracting those that want free stuff.
    And lastly, free isn’t appreciated. When you set a price incredibly low for something the value is diminished; when someone sees something as cheap or even something as free it seems like it’s worth nothing, and who wants something that isn’t worth anything?
    I’ve tried this before, I’ve given free samples (wouldn’t believe me if I told you, I’ve sold more when there was a price?), I’ve offered free fitness classes (and no one showed up).
    So again this was all a test, I wanted to see what this detox was worth to others. I wanted to see what people would invest in themselves. One time I ran a similar detox for $15, another time $80 and attendance didn’t deviate much (in fact we might have had more with a higher price).
    My thoughts were, I’d run this detox for the people, to let them choose what they could afford, so it’s not free but it’s reasonable for each one of you. Without expectations or judgement.
    I thought, people would pay $5 or $10 that couldn’t afford more, other may pay $50 or $60, every one has a different perspective; amounts of money means something different to every single person.
    Thousands of people saw this post, hundreds clicked (facebook tracks all those numbers), to me it’s surprising there isn’t a line up waiting to get in. I mean if you had an expert willing to offer their time for as much as you could afford, why not take advantage?
    To me, 14 days doesn’t seem like a big commitment, a private group with like minded people, and someone to help daily….seems like a no brainer. I really think the ‘pay what you can’ threw people for a loop. And don’t get me wrong, we have a great group that I can’t wait to get started with.

  • EM&B #177: Outsmarting Overeating
    It was my absolute pleasure and privilege to have the opportunity to interview Karen Koenig today on Exploring Mind and Body. In this episode we’re talking about her new book Outsmarting Overeating.
    Here’s more about Karen before we get into details about the show.
    Karen R. Koenig, LCSW, MEd, is the author of Outsmarting Overeating as well as five other books about eating and weight. A psychotherapist, eating coach, and speaker, she has been working with troubled eaters for over 30 years. A frequently quoted expert in both the popular media and professional literature, she lives in Sarasota, Florida. Visit her online at http://www.karenrkoenig.com.

    Most of us know what it’s like to have emotional eating issues. So many turn to food when we’re stressed out, having a bad day or are simply in a bad mood. And you know what, many people even reward themselves with unhealthy food on a good day.
    These are all habits and conditioned responses we’ve taught ourselves. And Karen does an amazing job on explaining how to regulate yourself and understand the issues at hand. We went over 8 essential life skills that are listed in her book, Outsmart Overeating to address the issues we deal with concerning overeating.
    8 Essential Life Skills

    * Wellness and Physical Self-care
    * Handling Emotions
    * Living Consciously
    * Building and Maintaining Relationships
    * Self Regulation
    * Problem Solving and Critical Thinking
    * Setting and Reaching Goals
    * Balancing Work and Play

    I had such a great time with this interview, I want to thank Karen for coming on the show and being such a fantastic guest. It’s not always easy to interview different types of people but Karen is so down to earth and easy to talk to, I thoroughly enjoyed our time together. Karen actually sent me a private message thanking me for the interview which hasn’t happened before so that goes to show what type of person she is.
    If you’d like to follow along with more of Karen’s work she blogs twice a week here.
    Thanks again Karen! And all the best to you out there in Outsmarting Overeating!

  • Creating a positive environment
    My idea of having a group of encouraging people when it comes to #health and #fitness is always something I work on. I heard years ago the 5 people you spend most of your time with are a reflection of who you are. Given that much of my day is around other people being fitness classes or personal training clients, I want to keep those people and that group as positive and optimistic as possible (if nothing else for selfish reasons). I don’t accept certain words (ie ‘I can’t’) around me, at classes or during workouts, it simply isn’t acceptable. These words are a frame of mind like most actions throughout the day.
    I’m not able to express how important your environment is and how much those we surround ourselves with influence our lives both positively and negatively. If there’s something you want to accomplish the very first thing I’d recommend is to engulf yourself in a lifestyle that represents what you want or where you want to go. If you want to start living healthier you start hanging around with people that live healthier. This is no different than those weight loss schemes that don’t work. Funny how friends of friends and groups of individuals cultivate around a weight loss shake for example; this isn’t a coincidence. Marketing schemes built around these products are to show you instant results (which are rarely sustainable). But it’s all about marketing, they show you quick results, maybe quick weight loss, a quick financial gain (if you choose to sell it) and there we are hooked into thinking we’ve made real changes when as soon as you go off the product we’re right back at square one.
    The problem is many don’t change their lifestyle, they don’t change their frame of mind, there isn’t any positive reinforcement happening except the massive weight loss without education and there you sit, in the exact same place as you were before you started.
    If you really want to make a change in your life, if you really want to make a difference, reach a goal or improve your quality of life, look to your environment first. Look to those around you, consider whether or not they’re encouraging, whether they hold you back or push you forward. Pay attention to what you watch on tv, what’s in your inbox, what you scroll through when you sit down in front of your computer. You may not know it but these will play a significant role in who you are, how you talk, think and act.
    I asked our group of class members to write down a positive affirmation or quote almost two years ago. It’s clearly time for an update but they’re still there, they sit around my mirror and I read them every single morning. They represent a positive group that we’ve built together, they represent a mind set and more than anything, the environment I choose to live in every single day.

  • EM&B #176: Financial Freedom for Women
    There’s a lot of women out there that still don’t take their finances in their own hands, there’s many men that do the same for that matter. But I really wanted to dig down to the root of the issue and find some financial freedom for women so I asked Barbara Stanny to come on and explain how she found her success.
    Now Barbara has an incredible story where she basically was in fear of money and turned all that around by taking control of her finances, life and now teaching financial freedom from women.
    I have to say Barbara was an absolute blast to interview. You’ll be able to hear how much fun we’re having as soon as you tune in. She’s down to earth, easy to talk to and clearly knows what she’s talking about.
    Even though her book Sacred Success is for women (myself being a man), I really enjoyed it. It’s not one of those boring financial books that put you to sleep, it has more to do with emotions, lifestyle and quality of life.
    A couple of my favorite parts are:
    – The homework at the end of each chapter. It’s important to follow through with the exercises if you really want financial freedom for women.
    – I love quotes in general but I especially enjoyed reading Barbara’s throughout the book. My favorite one that I can remember is “If you don’t deal with your money, your money will deal with you”.
    – And I love the part where Barbara explains the importance of emotionally letting go from whatever is holding you back. She suggests writing an angry letter for whatever is putting your emotions in turmoil. She also suggests writing your ‘angry letter’ over and over again until you’re ready to write a forgiveness letter.
    Barbara Suggests 3 Steps that can Improve Your Financial Situation in 4 Months
    #1. Read something about money every single day. It doesn’t matter what it is, just make sure it’s about money.
    #2. Every week have a conversation about money. Again, it doesn’t much matter what the topic is or how you’re doing it, just make sure you’re talking about money in some way every week.
    #3. Every month automatically transfer an amount of money from your checking account into a savings account. It doesn’t matter if it’s $5 or $500, just make sure you’re putting money away and forming a habit of saving and taking care of your money.
    Wrap Up
    I want to say a special thank you to Barbara for coming on the show. I think most of us could do just a little better managing and saving and paying attention to where our money goes and what we’re doing with it. Barbara’s book (Sacred Success), along with this interview really inspired me to pay more attention to what I’m doing with my finances, and I very much appreciate that.
    Remember to take small steps towards financial freedom, these changes don’t happen over night, and small is sustainable so take one small step today for your future tomorrow.
    And lastly if you’d like to join Barbara in a private community where they talk about money openly, and ask questions you can join for free on the first Monday of every month. It’s called Monthly Money Mondays!

  • Releasing Anger
    Releasing anger is such an important subject when it comes to reducing stress and our quality of life. Many of us carry around deep, deep anger for our entire lives. We could be mad at a parent, a spouse, or a situation from years past. It’s essential to our health to figure out how to release this anger and move on in our lives.
    #1. Realize we aren’t the victim
    This is a major factor in releasing anger. We need to understand sometimes there are circumstances out of our control. If we’re busy playing the victim, if everything is some one else’s fault, then we’ll have a very difficult time letting go.
    Often it’s not even our fault. Some times we do everything right in a given circumstance and we still don’t see the results we’re looking for. Letting go of self guilt in a circumstance is another way we can address releasing anger.
    #2. Many times these things happen for the best
    During the most difficult times it’s very hard to see outside the box, it’s hard to look from the outside in and it’s very hard to understand some situations that seem difficult are for the best. If we’re in a toxic environment, if our body is screaming for some stress relief and it’s time for us to move on, we’ll find a way to move on. It may not be consciously but deep down we know we need to move on which doesn’t mean it’s any easier to understand why or figure out how this is the best for us.
    #3. Find ways to release anger
    My first recommendation is to write an angry letter. This is where you sit down in a quiet setting and let your pen do the work. You might start off slowly or you might have a lot to say, whatever comes out, let it flow freely. Don’t stop yourself and don’t be embarrassed for the words that come out. Understand you may have many years of angry emotions coming out on this paper. Don’t judge yourself, just let it go.
    After you’re done writing you’re going to burn the paper you just wrote on. This isn’t to keep around the house, it isn’t to read again and it isn’t to show to anyone. Burn the paper and physically watch your anger dissolve into ashes.
    Throwing ice cube (or jumping on them), difficult physical activity, hitting a punching bag or even screaming (where no one can hear you) are all great ways to release anger.
    #4. There are no quick fixes
    The sooner you realize there is no such thing as a quick fix the sooner you’ll able to start putting in work that is going to change your life and take you toward the direction of releasing anger.
    We usually gain back what we lost if it’s a quick fix, if we took powders or pills, if it was a crash diet, if we joined a bootcamp for 3 weeks, it all comes back because there is no such thing as a quick fix. Start putting in the time and effort, lower your expectations of ‘over night results’ and you’ll give yourself a real chance at releasing anger.

  • Living in the moment
    On this show I wanted to talk about how I was able to extend a few pleasurable moments I had over the holidays with loved ones by living in the moment.
    I link both Anxiety and Depression to living in the past and future when our answer is living in the moment. I truly believe we can avoid the slipperly slope of medication if we look to living in the moment instead of the past or future.
    There are so many benefits to life by living in moment. Just think about it for a second. If you want a moment to last, if you want to appreciate every single detail, every noise, every sight, every feeling, why are we thinking about the past? Why are we thinking about the future?
    As I explain in this show I personally had thoughts of, ‘wow, what a wonderful time, how we do this again’, then I thought, ‘why haven’t we done this before’. And finally I thought, if this moment is so pleasurable why am I thinking about the past and future instead of appreciating right now?
    If you’re ever been around or even had a conversation with someone that is chronically depressed you’d understand when I say their mind set is in the past. Their thoughts, what they remember, even where they live in the present is very much in what happened to them earlier in life.
    This is the exact opposite when it comes to anxiety. When we’re anxious about something our mindset is in the future. You might think or hear thoughts like, ‘well what if this happens’, ‘what if so and so says that’, ‘what if I show up and this happens’. There’s all kinds of mind clutter going on in brains which is causing our anxiety and driving us crazy.
    If we could take just a moment to appreciate right now, no matter what’s going on, what you have to do or what happened to you, you’d be able to appreciate life on a different level. True happiness without any distractions.

  • 14 Day Private Group Detox
    This 14 Day Private Group Detox is pay-what-you-can! What does that mean?
    So it’s been awhile since my last group detox, which is why I couldn’t be more excited to share with you we’re launching another 14 DAY PRIVATE GROUP DETOX this month! This is actually called the 14 Day Pay-what-you-can-Stress-Detox.
    Why “pay what you can”? Because I know Christmas was difficult on a lot of your pocket books, and I want everyone to have a chance at group atmosphere detox. I also know people are out there paying thousands for schemes, pills and weight loss powders and that’s not what I’m about. Most of those are about your money and that’s me.
    This meal plan is a lifestyle meal plan, we’ll cover everything you put on your body to what you put in your body. I’ll teach you how to grocery shop, what ingredients to look for and how to prepare whole foods yourself (we’ll have recipes and grocery shopping lists for you).
    Everyone should have a chance at a reset, at a real detox that’s not harmful and that won’t have you back to your old habits within a couple days of completion.
    There really is no excuses here. If you can afford more you can pay more, if you can’t you’re more than welcome and no one’s going to judge or even know what you pay.
    It’s a brand new year, it’s time to get started the proper way, with a little guidance and group support. I’ll help you gain natural energy, sleep better, drop inches (which is a by product of a healthy lifestyle) and give you that boost you’re looking for to carry you past the 3 week of New Year Resolutioners.
    We start Jan 18th and we’re only taking 20 spots! What are you waiting for? Let’s do this together.

  • Choosing your life
    In this podcast I talk about choosing your life, creating the life of your dreams with includes everything from living in the moment to setting and achieving goals.
    You really can live the life of your dreams if you plan your life as such. I feel that far too many of us go with the flow, follow along and don’t plan properly. “If we’re not part of our own plan, we’re part of someone else’s”.
    i also believe many people believe in ‘destiny’ just as little too much. Believing in destiny removes all accountability, it takes our own personal power away and gives us a sense that we’re not able to choose our own destiny or choose your own life path.
    Choose your life, believe you can and go after your dreams! Make choosing your life a reality you live each and every day.
