The HTTP status code for "payment required" sat unused since 1999 because card fees made tiny payments impossible. AI agents changed that: an agent can't open a bank account, but it can sign a transaction. The Linux Foundation made the x402 Foundation operational with 40 members — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Google, AWS, Shopify, Coinbase, Circle, Ripple and Cloudflare among them — and agents ran 75 million payments through the protocol in 30 days.
We cover why the code sat unused for 27 years, why direct competitors all backed the same standard, and the tension nobody says out loud: an open standard whose volume runs overwhelmingly on one stablecoin, on one company's chain.

47.9% of global e-commerce traffic came from AI bots, and commerce has passed financial services as the most targeted industry for AI-driven cybercrime. The weapon is the same technology enabling legitimate agentic shopping.
We cover the three techniques doing the damage, why 90% of retailers are watching rather than governing, the phishing volume that doubled in eight weeks, and the line that stuck with us: loyalty points are the new shadow currency — stolen without triggering a single payment fraud signal.

76 million Americans bought something via an AI agent in a single month, under no federal framework defining what the agent owed them. Senator Warner's discussion draft creates one — a new legal category treating the agent as a fiduciary, with registration, auditable records, and a ban on using your data for anything but the task you delegated.
We cover the anti-gatekeeping clause that would force Amazon, Google and Apple to serve competing agents on equal terms, and the critique that the bill may be regulating one future while another arrives.

A billion people use Google's AI answer mode monthly. It names some brands and skips others, often before the recommended brand's website enters the picture — and 57% of consumers say they'd let an agent switch them to a better-value brand. Lightspeed, Sequoia and Kleiner Perkins just put $96m into the problem of knowing whether ChatGPT recommends you.
We cover why brands vanish structurally rather than randomly, Bain's warning about becoming a "fulfilment pipe", Amazon's counter-bet, and why the lead time on this is measured in quarters not weeks.

The first hard regulatory question about agentic commerce isn't AI safety. It's chargebacks. Tell an agent "book a flight under $400" and it books one for $389 — you authorised a description, not a purchase. New York's acting superintendent of financial services said the quiet part at the NY Fed: "The idea that a transaction can self-execute is a little jarring to a regulator."
We cover the three ways agents break existing consumer protection, Robinhood's blunt position that the customer bears the risk, and the four patterns worth building before the rules arrive.

Automated traffic crossed 57.5% of all page requests on the internet, putting humans below half for the first time. Cloudflare's CEO had forecast late 2027 — it arrived roughly eighteen months early. And about 87% of the pages agents visit are product pages, so the web's new majority audience is shopping.
We cover why agents make merchants with incomplete product data invisible rather than merely lower-ranked, why AI-referred shoppers went from converting 38% worse to 42% better in twelve months, and what Walmart learned by taking its agent experience back in-house.

Agentic commerce runs on four incompatible protocols, and merchants can't rebuild their checkout four times. Adyen's answer is one integration that speaks all of them — and at the launch, American Express, Mastercard and Visa all endorsed the same neutral infrastructure. Direct competitors backing one platform almost never happens.
We cover the three layers (data, orchestration, trust), why the $335m Orb acquisition days earlier tells you what Adyen actually expects, and the number that keeps it honest: only 2.2% of agent interactions currently reach a cart.

An ING cardholder asked an AI agent to find a wedding anniversary gift. The agent negotiated with a merchant's agent, which surfaced concert tickets inside the budget, and the payment settled over Mastercard's network with Worldline processing — in production, not a demo. Every layer of the stack was live and interoperable at once, on existing payment rails.
We cover why "production" is the word that matters, the four mechanisms Agent Pay uses to answer who is actually paying, and the four things still unsolved: no universal identity layer, unresolved liability, cautious consumers, and delivery logistics nobody can automate.
